Sex of Jack Dempsey

Guys, look at the BIG BLUE STRIPE at the bottom of the gill cover..........FEMALE without a doubt.

Males dont have (much) blue on the lower gills - its even rarer that they have blue right at the bottom.

That JD does not have enough blue spot to be female. In my experience keeping Jacks females have a lot more spots than what are on his fish.

It is a male. Spots on the gill plate is just as good a way to tell the sex as venting.
Females will have either a full blue spangling on the gill plate or you will see the spangling(dots) touching one another.
Males will either be totally absent of the spangling on the gill plate or the dots(spangling) will not be touching one another at all(as in perfect circles).
OP yours is 100% male.

Interesting -- Does a similar "spangling" sex ID approach apply to EBJD's??? :screwy:

Im saying about 90% chance its a male......Females usually have blue patches on their gill plates.....your doesnt appear to have patches and yours appears to have a pointed dorsal fin, which is yet another sign of a male.....DONT put it in with your EBJD cause they will not end well!!!!!!!

not trying to jack the thread or whatnot but im going threw the same situation, the JD i have is the same size as yours but the one noticable dif i see is that mine has very blunt (compared to yours) dorsal fin. Is this a good sign mine is a female? thnx. Again sry, not trying to jack the thread, just im in sort-of the same boat.

These threads where we wannabe experts debate the sex of a fish endlessly amuse me. Being the owner of a female Dempsey, I'd say male. Mine has a lot more blue on the gills than that and less color on the body, but hey, I certainly could be wrong.

People seem to get stuck on the colouring around the gill plate, gill plate colouring aside.... the shape of the fish screams Female to me.

I am guessing female by the shape as well. But I am only guessing. :D

Hard to go by the specs/color with so much inbreeding and the commonality of this fish.

This is a male 99%. I am giving it a 1% benefit of the doubt. Do NOT put it with the EBJD, it might not end well.

I bred hundreds of these guys and I currently have several pairs...the dorsal fin is not really a good indication since alot of females (perhaps all of them) will have that pointy long dorsal fin in good conditions (observe the photo below)...the gill plate is the give away, females have alot more blue but its not the dots some of you mention...its more like a blue smear sort of thing like one of my females in this photo:
