This is a male 99%. I am giving it a 1% benefit of the doubt. Do NOT put it with the EBJD, it might not end well.

I bred hundreds of these guys and I currently have several pairs...the dorsal fin is not really a good indication since alot of females (perhaps all of them) will have that pointy long dorsal fin in good conditions (observe the photo below)...the gill plate is the give away, females have alot more blue but its not the dots some of you mention...its more like a blue smear sort of thing like one of my females in this photo:

I am going to agree with you, I would have to say that my previous description of spots was poor. It's more of just a blue coloration of the gill plates. Lots of males do have some spotting around that area although mostly above the gill plates around the eye. Saying all that I am by no means an expert but I do feel that I'm reasonably knowledgeable when it come to JDs and still believe that fish is a male.

Interesting -- Does a similar "spangling" sex ID approach apply to EBJD's??? :screwy:

Actually no it don't. It seems the male in EBJD's will develope the black pigmentation, have a more elongated body and will have a better growth rate during the early months of it's life.
At least that is what I have observed with the 2 males and 1 female that I have had. All assumptions of course though;)
