Both fish are approx 2.5 in. long , but my new guy is definitly more slender shape. Take note of the shapes of their snouts and chins. Nice having my photos up to compare both fish.
I feel this is a male. 100%. The fact he stood out as an odd ball among 4 others that looked female. He had pronounced spots and a purplish color while with the others. all the others with him were yellow color.

Gold's can be iffy though. I had a female costa rican dovii that I and a lot of other members swore was a male, even up to 6.5".. finally when she laid eggs we were quite suprised..
This was her at 3".. she was insanely colorful and as you can see did also have black spots. The spots later turned to bronze spots.
This is what she turned in to though.. beautiful bronze color with blue fins..
Wow shes a beauty. That threw me for a loop with the spots. I still feel confident mine is male. After vent testing mine along with the 4 other dovii he was with at the pet shop and seeing the other 4 looked female color wise along with the other 4 having the (fish front) oO (anal fin) pattern it was obvious. Check out my photo gallery and observe the 9 in. female umbee I got rid of for the dovii. I had her a year. She laid eggs a few time.
