I have been keeping dats off and on since I got my first one in "92",they were an instant favorite of mine from the first time I saw a photo of one.I guess the first choice would apply to me although number five would fit if I had the tank space to try a breeding project.I raised a concern about the flooding of the market with so many wild caught baby dats in a previous post.

I have many things to say about this but heres something to consider....Do the people where ST's and other dats want to keep there rivers and bodies of water clean so these fish may have a future in them??? Isnt pollution one of the major reasons ST's are endangered or whatever they want to say about the situation now?? So when it comes to me having them in my tank with clean water ill prefer them out of the wild. One day they will kill them all off. So why not keep some. Yes it would be great to have a nice group that breed but who knows on how to get them to. To me it seems that most of the countries that sell and catch these guys are in it for the money dont you think??

Is this something you have read about recently? Re: poluted waters affecting ST population .... I thought they were purely overfished in the wild, thus very few wild ones left.

It was my understanding that it was a little of both.

interesting...must do some more research. want to find out more now.

regarding trying, to breed them, its incredible how so many fishkeepers keep tigers and yet still no success of breeding in aquarium..

not to derail the thread, carry on with the poll .;)

IMO, all the fish will eventually get killed by hobbist. Even if you are experienced or not, How many of any fish kept in hobbist tanks are actually return to the wild. Zero!! And you wonder why lawer maker want to ban on exotics?

Your average lawmaker here in the states is more concerned with environmental impacts of exotics released into the wild here than they are with the fate of a species in its native habitat. And as far as them being released back into the wild the environment will be better served if they aren't released back into the wild unless its a program that is set up for that purpose since no captive raised fish in a hobbyist tank should be released into the wild regardless of where you live.

A captive breeding program would be a wonderful thing for both the hobby and the wild populations but until some of the money we sink into our hobby goes back into breeding and conservation to help out wild populations of the fish we enjoy keeping then the future seems grim for more than just Datnoids.

I don't really get whats going on in this thread. You guys are upset that people are buying the latest shipment of dats?

I dont know if upset is the proper word to use but if you consider that these fish are not bred in captivity and this and other countries regularly receive bags of the babies that are taken from the wild then there is cause for concern. It's not like the fish constantly breed and reproduce in the wild so eventually that wild population will run out.
