I almost believe that they are being captive bred,I mean seemingly more difficult things have already been accomplished. They have created whole new cichlids and mixed different catfish together to come up with new species. It does'nt seem all that impossible for someone with the resources to get behind this and get it done.

i voted 5 but i am 2 and 5. i want to get my hands on many datnoids and try to see if i can get a breeding project started.

Yeah but alot is still unknown about dats. The best way to start off in the search to breed theses guys. Is to catch them breeding in the wild. Someone needs to let us know what the water is like when they are breeding. If someone was able to catch a video of them in the act it would explain alot. Just like sexing dats is still a mystery....There are suggestions that hint what they could be but nothing is positive cause what you feed a dat can effect that out come. For all we know theses guys breed in brackish. Ive read some threads of people using crazy amounts of salt to help fight off datnoid disease when it was really going around. And some of the people i talk to about it used so much the water was almost salt and the dats were able to take such high levels of salt. So if you think about it maybe these guys breed towards brackish parts of the rivers. Another thing to think about is can dats change there sex? This could be why its impossible to figure out. So the only way were going to get anything done is to start at the root of where they come from and understand what goes on in the waters there.

i know this might sound dumb but why not just take a full grown dat and operate on it to figure out the sex (dont kill the fish!). like does it have eggs? sperm?

could we hire a scientist in indonesia or thailand to go after them ? ...

I have a feeling captive breeding can be done, and it will be necessary to ensure that dats are around in the future. If they happen to go extinct in the wild there are going to be a lot of fingers pointed on this site.

That being said, I have a feeling they are less likely to breed in a barebottom tank. The best bet is if someone creates an aquaculture facility and uses hormone injections to facilitate breeding. There have been a lot of species in the past (which weren't bred in captivity) where this method has proven very successful.

hormone injections! i was thinking about that too...

Ive seen videos of farms that had tons of monster dats. STs, ITs and the others all trying to breed them with no luck. They even feed them all the natural stuff they normally eat cause they thought it might help to get them to breed but still no luck. If dats go extinct in the wild its not going to be from us on MFK ill tell you that. The first place i'd be pointing the finger would be from where they come from. Well whoever unlocks this secret to the dats will make a ton of money off of it.

What's gotta happen is the people who have tried breeding them have to first do some studying of the fish in their natural environment.Snorklers have to get under water and film them at different times of the year so that those tapes can be studied, then they will eventually find something out about their different behaviors, and then they can place them in pools and ponds based on what they learn from the footage.

Yup thats what needs to be done. I even bet the local fisherman in these areas have even more knowledge about their spawning.
