Shamu at Sea world Kills his trainer...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes, please post the source about wether Tilikum is captive bred or wild caught. and don't use wikipedia. i don't consider that a reliable source since members can go there and make changes

what makes you think they WON'T survive in the wild? and again, you're not addressing my reasoning. look at what is really best for the animal,........... if you were the whale, what would you prefer? i think if i were the whale, i'd want to be set free. let me deal with it myself. don't think you can cage me in, feed me until i die in this lame enclosure that you built for me and think that is the best for me. I may rather choose to be free, come and go as i please, adapt to the freedom of the ocean, AND risk death. RATHER than keeping me in a cell for the rest of my life while you feed me fish and squid for the rest of my life. (which is what YOU might think is the best for me) i wanna eat seals, sea lions, penquins, sharks,........... like all other killer whales in the wild do. How would you like it if i kept you in your house for the rest of your life and fed you pizza only for the rest of your life?
Well i do love pizza .. :naughty:

of course there are more deaths relating dogs and horses. if there were thousand upon thousands of killer whale owners, i guarantee you there would be a higher death rate. this argument is rediculous
thats why i said % not actual number .. i dont think think there would be more deaths by whales then other animals .. looking at the history at sea world .. it seems rather safe .. as long as you play by the rules ..

so i have another question .. since i work in a hospital .. and if got sick because of being around someone with a deadly illness .. you would think that the hospital would be held responsible for my death .. yet because of an exceptable risk the guys who fish for crab can have a much higher death to employee ratio then any other job in the world ... if a hospital had 1 out of every 100 employees die every year (my hospital has 3000 so that would be 30 of us) they would shut us down with out a question ..

the job has risk and you have to accept them or dont do the job .. it is sad that it happened .. but if you dont accept what could happen .. dont do the job .. im sure she knew what the history of this whale was .. and she didnt think twice about being around it .. knowing full out that this could and has happened in the past .. and i doubt that she would want the whale downed because of the act ..

im not saying your ideas are wrong .. i just do not see it the same way .. in this case with this type of animal .. its bound to happen .. and it has .. and i will again in the future .. just like the circus and lions and bears and elephants .. its all part of the job ..

i was on wikipedia the other day and was looking up the movie Predator with arnold schwarzenegger and it had a part where it said some of the scenes were shot in the jungles of Comptom and Eazy E was one of the actors or something like that.

on another site, there was a thread about the funniest things on wikipedia and people just posted so many rediculous stuff about what they've seen. i heard they regulate wikipedia but still,........... i dont' believe wiki as a source, i always double check other sources

Tillikum is easily recognized because his dorsal fin is completely flopped to his left side. He has 2 small black dots/lines in his left eye patch and on his right. Tillikum is the largest captive orca not only at the Sea World Florida but in the world with his 22 feet and his 12,000 pounds. He also has many scars across his chin.

Because of the incident in which Tillikum was involved with two other whales in which his trainer was killed in 1991 trainers at Sea World do not do any water work with him, water work with him would be hard anyway because of his size.
Most of the time, Tillikum is alone is one of the pools of the Shamu Stadium. In the show, he makes jumps and he splashes with his tail the first fifteenth rows. After, he slides out for a beautiful picture. For whatever reason he was involved in a killing of his trainer no one knows but in 1999 a man was found dead in his pool, he was on Tillikum’s back when the Sea World’s staff saw him. Tillikum didn’t kill him; he probably died out of the cold water in the whale’s pool. Since then the trainers are even more careful when around Tillikum. That proves orcas are not some toys to be ridden they should be in the wild, WILD.

Tillikum has been captured in Iceland in November 1983 and was sent to the Sealand of Pacific in Victoria, British-Columbia, Canada where he would live with Haida 2 & Nootka 4 after Sea Land's male orca died just few months previously.

There the three shared their tiny pool for many years. Tillikum would often be closed at night in a small, metal, holding pool from which most of his scars are.

In 1991 three orcas, Tillikum, Nootka IV & Haida II were involved in a killing of their trainer.

On December 24th Tillikum becomes dad for the 1st time. Haida 2 gives birth to a male calf which is named Kayaquet. After the birth of Kayaquet, Tillikum was held at the small pool more often than usualy. He and Kayaquet never really met even because it was thought that Tillikum would harm him, even kill him by playing a bit too rough and because of the lack of space.

In March of 1992 Nootka IV gave birth to a male calf fathered by Tillikum which died only 33 days after.

After that Tillikum has fathered many more calves, in fact most of SW calves were fathered by him. Not all have survived though.

-Tillikum now lives at Sea World Florida, with 7 other whales, his two sons (Taku, Tuar & Tekoa), his daughter (Unna), and three other females: Katina, Kalina and Taima.
-His trainers do not do any water work with him
-He is the biggest captive orca in the world

-Kasatka a female held at SWC was artificualy impregnanted using Tillikum's sperm. This is the 1st time this has been successfully on an Orca, she gave birth to a male calf named Nakai. Her daughter Takara is belived to be impregnated the same way too, she gave birth to a baby girl name Makea..
-Katine gave birth in August of 2002 !

Lets just all move on. Everyone has an opinion and there is no reason this should get heated like this. So whose getting a new tank and if so I wanna see a new thread with pics.

Iffrat, i get what you're saying too, but same as the killer whales, lions, tigers and bears, oh my,.............. i think none of those should be used for entertainment. they should be behind large enclosures for viewing only. not jump thru hoops for our entertainment. with killer whales in particular, i think they shouldn't be kept in captivity at all. there's no way we should keep that huge animal in a man made enclosure. i think if we are to keep killer whales, they should be in a 5 acre pool that is at least 1/4 mile deep and they should only be used for display. other than that, we shouldn't keep them

and crab fishers, hospital workers,............ thats' a totally different thing compared to working with killer whales. i'm not going to start with that

oh i can agree with that no question .. its nice to be able to see these animals .. but when i was in hawaii .. i got to see whales ... it was not 5 feet away or anything .. but it was still breath taking .

and i was not saying the jobs are the same .. i was talking about the risk only .. everything has risk .. but for some reason some risk is ok .. others not .. even knowing they are both deadly .. you know what i mean ..
