I currently have a Jack Dempsey that is 6 inches,I have had him for less than a year.I remember purchasing him at Petsmart for 5 dollars.Something told me about this fish that he would be full of personality and wont take sh*t from other fishes, since he was the most aggressive one out of the tank.I figure I needed a tank mate for my current 10 inch Tiger Oscar and give it a shot for the temporary 55 gallon grow out tank. This JD wasn't 100% shy from what other websites claim about them.He was very much in the open and ended up going into certain spots he liked. Some people give their fishes names and that is what I did,due to his aggression I named him Uruk Hai.which I am sure there are people on this forum who like lord of the rings or in general know the meaning of it.My JD is maybe a tame cichlid, but he will fight anyone that he feels he can take on either way, with out backing down from a fight. He already put my Blood Parrot and my largest OB peacock into their place for territory at same time.Other then that,he minds his own business without causing fights,he lets other fishes start them first, then he finishes it by dominating to show who is the boss.
First day I bought him.

i have almost the same story, bought em from petsmart about a year ago and hes 6" now too. hes the boss of the tank. ive got black gravel so all his colors come out. the hikari pellets help too... hands down favorite fish, ill take a pic in like an hour or two when my water clears

exactly the same as mine, except the colors are not shown like they use to with the natural rocks now.It wont be a year for mine just yet,i have 5 months to go still until he reaches 1 years old.Mine will eat pellets at times, but not always.Overall JDs are great to own.

For some reason,it seems like the male JDs are much cooler looking than the females, the EBJD I have in my 10 gallon, since its not even 2 inches at all yet.I hope its a female,so I can try to get the JDs to mate later down the road when the EBJD is 6 inches.
