My JD is about 10" now but unfortunately likes to hide a lot. I have added tiger barbs and giant danios to help bring him out. He killed every othet larger type fish I had w him in a 4' 90G, such as nicaraguensis and silver dollars but he doesnt bother the tiger barbs. My best looking fish but not my favorite personality in a fish. Like my chocolate cichlid show tank the best.

dempsey420 yours is a female.. and i think Adam12345 is too...

ive always wondered if male or female, i heard females have the blue gills but mine had the pointed dorsal fin so i was never sure what i had

I've kept a few through the years and they've all been hiders. They tended to stay in one spot undercover all day and were quickly startled. But when they did come out for a while, they were very good looking fish. I won't own another one. I don't like the hiding and nervousness. I've had Tiger Barbs that were braver than any of my Jacks.

It seems like your JDs have more of a beard then mine, which I have read that the ones with more blue around their faces are females, while males don't have the blue beard.

Female have the blue gills male have pointed fins and get bigger then 8".

I bought the one in my avatar at petsmart for about 4 bucks. My wife named him Buford. He was about 2 inches.

He's now 6 inches and has developed a fondness for eating tiger barbs for midnight snacks. He s eaten 6 this month. He is definitely NOT a hider. Always front and center. He is going to be a problem in about another inch or so.....

A larger tank is in his immediate future

I was going to point that out as well. My 9" is female and my 6" is male beyond the beard the females tend to get bulkier in different areas.
