i love this thread... i love reading and information about all the natural foods.. in their raw state.. i will also be following this thread..keep the information coming.. love it.
 
When I was younger, my cousins and I would forage in the forest, with wild onions and often some flowers of some sort. I don't really know to be honest. I have a lot of dandelions in the yard and a lot of this spiky pesky lettuce stuff. But I don't think the latter is edible. I don't really know what else there is to make! Dandelions is where I'd start most likely.

I make dandelion wine, and I also make dandelion fritters...very easy to do.

Milkweed has a somewhat controversial liver toxin. I'm sure it's fine for a snack, but not too often.

I eat them raw usually, like salad. The nettles, I just pick off baby leaves, roll them, and chew them with my molars. Rarely get stung and it doesn't really bother me when I do.

This has been refuted by a lot of natural foods people. To my knowledge and reading, milkweed is 100% non toxic. Cant say the same for dogbane, which is the plant that gives milkweed its bad name.

I eat some wilds raw...but...cooking is better IMO. I pick nettles with my hands, and year round will gather about the first 3 layers of leaves with the stem, just pinching it off with my thumb and forefinger. Skin there is so tough you dont get stung, but you can get some tingly feelings if you spend a good amount of time picking (An hour and a half maybe?)

I am going to make my notes on facebook public, and most some links here...got off to a late start, so I didnt do as much as I could have...hopefully next spring I will add some mushroom gathering in there as well.

Hoping this isnt a thread jack, although I am feeling bad at this point. :(

I just looked up milkweed and none of what I see is what we call milkweed here. It looks like Sow Thistle varieties are the look-alike I know. So change my previous post to Sow Thistle, and it even looks like people regularly eat that, too! Darn these common names! I had never heard of dogbane or the real milkweed until just now. Thanks!
 
Sounds similar to the raw food diet. But the raw food diet is vegan, absolutely no dairy or meat. I follow the raw food diet but I will eat fish and sometimes chicken. Every now and then I have a slip and eat a little dairy or beef. It takes awhile to fine tune yourself to find the right diet that works for you. The raw food diet is not really a diet though, more like a lifestyle. It's not a diet to lose weight or anything like that. You get tons of health benefits and the weight loss is part of it.

Raw food diet does not eat anything processed either. So when you make meals it's all natural and made from scratch. There is some really tasty and creative things some people make, you'd be surprised.

Eating like this definitely makes you feel and look better. What a lot of people don't understand is that most of your fitness is all in your diet. People think working out like crazy makes you lose weight. That is not true. If you eat right you get healthy and lose weight almost effortlessly.
 
When I use the term diet, I am referring to the scientific term diet as in the noun: The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. I never refer or use diets in the sense of something to loose fat for the short run.
 
It's for that reason that I have trouble saying the word "diet" at all. I say "Way of eating" instead since there's much less chance of misinterpretation.

Today I had a light day. Almond milk for breakfast, two eggs, 1/2 pound of turkey, and a few bites of aged cheese and a green apple for first lunch. Second lunch was a few leaves of collard greens and a green apple. I'll probably eat some more grass-fed beef liver tonight.
 
i agree the word diet is just so negative... healthy low fat and natural are the words i like.. raw is something i am just now investigating because i would like my healthy way of eating to even be better.. is eating a raw diet more expensive.. or is it just more to do?.. i don't mind more to do.. definitly always stay away from box and prepared foods... i cannot take msg at all..i want something that sticks with me.. something filling and satisfying that does not lead to snacking an hour later.. i lost 30 pounds and want to lose a few more..but most of all ...i want those pounds to be history.. the knew rehab was the best thing that happened getting me back to normal exercise... but i want to eat right and stay this way.. lol

Organic, grass fed beef liver is extremely affordable, and the bone marrow is also very affordable dollar-to-calorie and so nutritious. Added a magnesium supplement since modern veggies are usually grown in mineral-depleted soil. Feeling great.
