Shark Eggs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
went to Jay's Aquatics, had water tested for everything incase it was something we were missing. A little nitritie but nothing that could be the reason.
Replacing the heavy sand substrate with a corser type sand to prevent packing and dead pockets, refilling up with RO and previous tank water.
purchased and added a protien skimmer, thinking about waiting a week and if all parameters have held steady they want to try again.
Any better ideas or does this seem like the way to go?
They still have in their tank an engineer goby, hermit crab, horse shoe crab, clown fish a couple snails and a couple ghost shrimp.

If you want to go with the shark, I might make it JUST a shark tank. Take away as many variables as possible.

that's pretty much what they are intending to do, Saw a very small, very cute adult coral cat shark at the pet store.

I'm on my fourth shark egg at work...I find it incredibly interesting :). The first one didn't make it a few days after hatching, just found it dead, it seemed very lethargic from the get got though. The second hatched, I got him eating on ghost shrimps and then whole/chopped shrimp, and he was sold quickly. The third was bought before it hatched, the guy came in and told when it hatched, and the last I heard he was having trouble getting it to eat. Unfortunately he has several other fish in the aquarium...green wolf eel and whatever...so its hard to "leave" food for the shark without the others getting it first. I'm not sure if it will make it. I have one shark egg now hanging out, will let you guys know how it goes.

I think the plan is, buy the really sm adult coral cat shark, then an egg and see how that goes. Glad others have had the babies just die, not that I want them to die, but it's nice to know that it just happens.

They are not going to get rid of the fish & couple crustations they have now, but are not going to add anymore.

It would be interesting to know what the infant mortality rates were like in the wild with these species...

GL, and keep us posted.

I'd think they were pretty high, just from reading accounts of the amount of deaths that accure on these fish type forum boards alone. The not so local LFS said they think about 50% don't hatch even with proper handling of the egg, and about 33% die from not eating or ? with in the first two weeks. I wonder if anyone has done research on it?

Dang...not very good numbers...I may still get one. :D

I know I would be heartbroken if it decided not to hatch/live though. :(

I felt really bad that he died but it's the chance you take and I guess if they all survived the balance between prey and preadtor would be screwed up and they would be gone. I really enjoyed the idea of an egg(once I got over it being dumped on us) then candling it was awesome. Figured out a safe way to candle the eggs that worked really well. We will do it again for sure. I think we'll start looking for a egg after the holidays. Tank parameters are holding well so it seems to be good to go.
