How it tastes bears no reflection on where it comes from. The question is about ethics, not about taste.

how do we know they dont go down to the docks when the local shark tournament comes in, and they collect the fins? who says they fin the shark and throw the rest away?

when i catch a shark, i fin it and use the rest, throwing the fins back in the water or in the trash. depending on where i clean the shark.

yea just go join peta already.

shark fin soup is the best kind of soup around.

yknow. shark fin itself is tasteless. it's the golden threadlike crunchy bits in the soup.

You must have had a not-so-expensive or good shark fin soup. When the 'crunchy bits' are small that is a cheapo soup. A proper (expensive) shark fin soup would have the whole fin in it. See below (not the best example cause the pieces are still pretty puny seeing that it fits into one bowl)

I assure you that if you take all the ingredients and ommit shark fin, the "shark fin" soup would taste not as good. Like most chinese soups, the taste is in the soup after boiling the soup for so long (try a proper chicken herbal soup - the chicken is almost tasteless cos the essence 'bleeds' into da soup ^^

PS: the pictured soup is only one of the varieties availalbe ... this one in is a sticky variety ... there are also clear-type varieties. mmm yum. By the way, shark fin does not need to be in the soup form only ^^

How many bowls of soup do you think you'd get from a "local shark tournament"? It has been well documented before, fishing for sharks solely for their fins is commonplace, and unless someone is making "fair-trade" sharkfin soup with commercially farmed sharks then you're supporting those fishermen.

BTW, not everyone is a fanatic. I'm not some tree-hugging vegan PETA hippie, I eat meat (I just had bacon for breakfast in fact). The difference here is that 'meat' (beef, sheep, etc) are bred in numbers and farmed for their meat. They're killed humanely, and most of the animal is used one way or another. Sharks are caught randomly with no regard for wild populations, finned, and chucked back overboard. I thought most people who called themselves fish enthusiasts would have enough of a conscience to be able to see the difference, guess not.... :(

I suppose you guys eat whale too? Use herbal meds made from wild tigers?

*edit* krichardson; I'd have no objection to eating cat or dog, in fact its on my 'list of things to try' before I die in fact. I wouldn't eat a white tiger though, thats the difference ;)

I say leave the fins, and the rest of the shark, in the water.

Those of you who think the fin has anything to do with the taste of the soup, you really need to research the preparation of the fins. You will find that the fin does not contribute to the taste in the least bit. It is only a thickening agent. The fin is stripped down to the cartilage; all else is discarded. The cartilage is bleached white and then dried. It is completely tasteless.

Other forms of cartilage can be substituted for the shark fins since the ingredient sought after is just gelatin.
