Shark license

I agree. There are FAR better things to worry about than the one bull shark in the US in private hands.

So true, Matt.

Look at the number of Lions, Tiger, and other large cats that have ended up in the hands of private individuals. Only to have to eventually either be destroyed or in the cases of the lucky ones given away to Zoo or some wild animal sanctuary.

Compared to them - the number of private aquarists who've attempted to be large requiem sharks is very few. And the number of private aquarists who've attempted to keep lemons or bull sharks - is even smaller still.

I'm not talking about bullsharks specifically. I have very little knowledge about sharks compared to you and have no desire to keep them at the moment. I just used bullshark as and example for a large shark. And we only know of one but There are idiots you catch small sharks, not sure of the king and toss them in there 40'gallon tanks with seawater.

screw shark liscences, we need child birthing liscences...

there are far more mistreated, starving, poor, violent, etc... children in this world that need help/families than some damn sharks.

and yes i love sharks with a passion.

Is it me or is there people who have come on here lately that I never have heard of just to stir up trouble? Every once in a while I see this on other forums and then they are gone as fast as they came. I think I will send Moe, Larry and Curly after them.

As I stated - the problem is lack of proper education - not the need for licenses or restrictions.

By saying that people need a special permit or license to keep a shark, reguardless the species - is basically a kin to saying you need a special permit to own any canine or any feline (including - domesticated Dogs, and Cats). Which is just insanely Crazy.

There are literally nearly 400 species of sharks in the world. Less than 25% can be actually be kept in captivity with regular success. And of those only about 40 species of sharks are capable of realistically being kept by private aquarists.

Here's the thing to consider - the largest privately owned fish tank on this board - is at present time about 50,000 gallons. While a 50,000 gallon tank won't be large enough to keep a Bull Shark or Lemon Shark for it's entire life. It is more than enough - to keep Blacktip reefs, Nurse Sharks, or Bonnetheads.

My point is that keeping sharks by a private aquarist is entirely possible - with enough financial resources, space, and proper education. And additional restrictions would likely do more harm than actual good in this situation. So education is the key - not more restrictions.

That is already illegal to do. You need a proper permit/paper work to collect and keep most elasmo species from the wild (in the US).

I agree....it would be nice to have regulation, but where you have regulation you are also spending money, and you are also stepping on toes.

Its sad to think that there are people out there keeping sharks in an abusive manner, however the best we can do is help to educate, and learn from one another to make sure that this doesnt happen.

I agree with a lot of your points. And in my opinion permits are not needed for most sharks commonly kept in captivity. There are a few sites where you can order some large sharks. Sharks are in many cases bought as a novelty. Permits I guess aren't needed just there needs to be some why to verify a large shark is going to a decent home. It could be a permit to people selling sharks that reach 10 feet thy they need proof that the person has the capability to keep these sharks. I 100 percent agree it's fine for hobiest to keep sharks like bamboo and black tips just for those large sharks. I agree that the last thing we need is more regulations but protecting the fish is important as well. I'm am not trying to cause trouble just share my opinion. If anyone has problems with this post feel free to pm me. Otherwise I will reply here.

I have been inactive on this forum, but after seeing the responses here, will be visiting more often! :D

Mo' .Gov Mo' problems.

unnecessary licensing is out of control.

Yes unnessacery licensing is out of control. One example in NC is piranhas in NC. One idiot released them into a river and now they are illegal with out a license. The issue that comes up with this topic is that is the licensing unnessacery? Getting a large shark may be difficult and expensive but it is possible. This site sells bullsharks, sand tiger sharks, and other larfe sharks. The require information and picture to prove you have a good tank but that info can be faked and stolen. http://www.sharksupply.com/store.htm
