Short Body wild caught marulioides

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, I hear mouth farting again.

How on earth is substrate "torturing" my fish?
When did I suggest deep substrate?

It is fact, ANY fish will thrive in water with some kind of foliage in.
Even open swimmers.
You know plantation is important for them to build their nests with.
But I suppose you knew that right?

And I guess that tiny tank is also "Malaysian way" is it? and you think this is optimal?

Dun think so anyone farted, maybe its someones ego

Keeping messy eating fish with substrate is inviting trouble, debris stuck in substrate will produce toxic gases (dun tell me you dont know this)

Try putting your finger in an adult large channa bare tank, it'll take your fingers off. A fish that swim around casually in a bare tank is no sign of a fish in distressed.
And I oso notice there is only a single fish in there, so who does that channa intend to mate with? the pump?

That tiny tank is a 422, its enough to keep a short body marulioides, so suddenly you've the international marulioides minimal tank size guide?

First off that tank looks far to small a 422 isn't big enough for that species of fish even if its a short-body, and as a fish keeper its you're job to provide the fish with its surrounding. Seeing that you can't even provide it with a proper tank size, shows he doesn't know sh1t! Tell you're friend to sell that fish before he kills it... OR start doing his job. And where did you get the 99.9% of people have bare tanks when keeping these fish in Malaysia? Tell you're friend to sit in a empty room and see how entertaining that is, because that's basically what you're doing to that fish.

sad....

Marulioides trive on water that is;

+/- 0.5PPM TDS
+/- 0.5PPM NO3
0 NO2
0 NH3/4
Until you can provide this which is the source water param of the fish, stop BSing everyone about its proper environment

Keeping a single maruloides in a 10 x 3 x 3 is still suffering for the fish, its still living in captivity, stop lying to yourself pls. Its like you live in an 8x8 lock up as compared to a 15 x 15 fully furnish cell.

Btw hv you been to malaysia? if not stop smacking your own mouth about the way we prefers to keep our fishes, we've been keeping them and breeding them long before you've even heard about toman bunga.

Jesus Christ, people on this site are getting ridiculous!!! Fish looks happy and health to me, isn't that what we strive for? if you so worried about providing a natural environment THEN STOP TAKING IT OUT OF THE WILD AND FROM IT'S NATURAL ENVIRONMENT!!!!

This is malaysian style for keeping channa, bare tank. Channa are not skittish fish, imo they dun need all the cover, they're brave enough. As for substrate I think big fish do better without it, substrate will create toxic pocket, when the fish swipe the sand they releases these toxic into the tank and may kill the fish.

This is kinda true but generally its a matter of lazy care. Having many tanks with 3-4 inches of substrate I can tell you that sifting gravel every 6 months takes care of it. Substrate will also host beneficial bacteria and help improve water quality. Just saying yes if a tank is neglected substrate can be potentially dangerous but that is a long time without sifting gravel to get truly toxic bubbles in your tank. All non breeder tanks I have are full of substrate even when kept with fish that don't stir it because I do.

With regards to working in the tank being dangerous because the fish is aggressive, hmmm... I tend to not keep animals that won't let me give them a proper home. I don't keep animals that are to aggressive so I can't clean the tank. At any rate they make siphon extensions that are quite long if you don't want to make one yourself. I'm just a fan of decor in tanks, even bare bottom ones, add some drift wood or something, even most of the bare bottom tanks I've seen unless keeping rays exclusively will pack a piece of decor.

if 100% pellet feeding 6 mths may scrape thru, if feeding live fishes, prawns (esp shell prawns), I think you've to siphon every month. Thats just too troublesome. As for the bacteria, so long you've a good filter that can keep 0 NO2 and NH3/4, that would be the best with or without substrate. but if you're busy and slack maintenance than you're looking for trouble hence why I do not recommend substrate for large channa

I've no trouble with ppl who prefers a fully planted tank, but why in malaysia we dont do that is, channa tank needs to be covered tight, normally acrylic sheet or glass, keeping in such condition plus the lightings for the plants will produce too much heat in our already hot climate the water temp may rise to 30 - 32ºC, Maruliodes thrive in waters between 16 - 25ºC, so its quite tough on them if you keep in such conditions and most time you hardly will get a beautiful fish.

Moreover as mention earlier, you need to be super hardworking to maintain such tank with such messy eaters.

Couldnt more agree with you.

Btw, nice speciment

Hey Tokyo, I keep Cories in bare bottom tanks. You gonna tell me I'm wrong by doing so? Calm down dude. As long as the water quality is great and the fish seems happy then let it be. I keep all my fish in bare bottom tanks, why? Because of the ease of cleaning. If something dirty is in a corner, I could easily vacuum it out. Now lets say I had gravel or sand for substrate.. With gravel, if takes a lot of time to clean, and even if I took an hour, it still would not be 100% clean. With sand, my fish kick it up sometimes and covers up the waste and other debris, too much work and my fish aren't guaranteed pristine water. WIth bare bottom, I can do that for them.

@OP: Nice fish. :D
