Not going to tell you anything.
Talk about people getting explosive!

It is MY OPINION that Channa thrive in as close to a biotope as possible in a home aquarium.
Keyword *OPINION.

Your fish, keep how you like.
But for someone to say I am "torturing" my fish by using substrate is a little stupid I think.

And I stick with what I said, the tank in the video I am talking about (which as it happens belongs to no-one on this thread) is not very nice for said fish at all.
4ft x 2ft x 2ft where I am from is too small for a Channa Marulioides.
Add to that the fact that it is an empty glass box, not much for the fish is it!

Yes sure we could all be guilty by taking a fish from the wild into a home aquarium, but the least we could do is provide SOME space and a little bit of natural environment?

A fellow member of the forum that I mod at (snakeheads.co.uk) is as far as I know the only person to breed Marulioides in home aquaria.
Something tells me that his fish must have been comfortable enough to breed in their environment.
His environment is a larger tank with heavy foliage and substrate.

Sure, we don't all want to breed, but it shows their comfort?

Hello
Well I agree with Tokyo, this guys tank is a joke.
Bare tanks are no good for channa.I have 30 tanks set up and running for
My channa species.which I have kept for over ten years.and have bred a good number of them,I have also a good number of friends in Malaysia, which keep channa, and they seem to believe in keeping their channa in nicely planted set ups.
So all this about Malaysian channa keeper not using substrate is total bull****!!!!!.
In my eyes it not better for the fish but better for the keeper as it's easier to maintain.... So I class it as the lazy boy way of keeping channa.

And Tokyo I've told you this before never argue with idiots!!!!!

i agree with tokyo and thor! that "no subtrate" thing is just hilarious! if you keep your channa that way fine.. but don't tell others that its not ok for big channa to have substrate just because YOU don't wanna do regular maintenance

The guy posted pics to share a beautiful fish, not get ridiculed on his style of fish keeping. Bare bottom is his choice, which I agree w/, and not once did he ask for anyone's opinion on tank set up. Shoot, it isn't even his tank. Get over yourselves.

But you know thats what happens when you post a picture in a public opinion forum!
People will discuss, thats what the forums are for!

Have you been to msia in the first place and see how we keep channa?
What a moron, bare tanks are no good for channa?
why?
It is much easier to keep optimum water quality in bare tank than fully loaded tank, bet you didnt know this, shows how shallow you're in the art of large channa keeping.

Discus breeds in 1.5x1.5 bare tank,
So according to the way you benchmark, is this the recommended standard of keeping them?

People, let him keep his fish how he wants, its healthy and I don't see how this is "improper conditions". Channa don't care if tank has substrate or not, plants or not, its a fish not a self aware human being. This fish is healthy with no apparent problems, I see nothing wrong here. We are removing fish from their natural habitat and keeping them in a glass box, of course its not optimal conditions, telling him to get a bigger tank or add a substrate- the fish is still trapped in a glass box. It's a selfish hobby!

Not true, forums are to discuss topics on hand not everything else. Where are the damn mods? Seriously, this forum has gone down hill. Everyone thinks they're style of keeping is better so... "let me flex my OPINION on someone else because there is no way I can be wrong.". Again, get over yourselves and comment on how healthy this fish looks even in a tank that you hate.

Well said
