The only time I could see putting a fish down as a viable option is if you absolutely cannot find someone that is capable of providing it with a good home or if death is inevitable and the fish is suffering. For example, if the only people willing to take the fish (either for free or for your full asking price) only have a 10G tank, then I think putting the fish down would be better than giving it to someone who will ultimately give it a slower, more drawn out death.

Profit should not be a factor what-so-ever. It's sad that so many people treat their pets as commodities. If you are upset that you paid X dollars for it and no one is willing to pay what you did, it's not that people are unwilling to pay fair price, it's probably more likely that you just overpaid. The fact that you would put the fish down for that reason is wrong.

But even if you are looking at this like an investment, which it looks like you are, you're being completly irrational. Have you ever bought stock? If you paid $50/share and the price drops to $25 at a time where you absolutely had to get out, would you take the $25 for it, or would you burn the stock certificate?

I don't know why, but for some reason I feel like I need to defend this member - to a point. Let's assume this statement is legit. Here we have a long time MFK member (since 2006) with over 2800 posts. He stated he lost a job and is depressed. Although I agree with the posts that state he should give the fish away and it's the right thing to do, I keep thinking there is something more going on here. If you took the time to read all of the posts on this thread from him, it sounds more like someone is in deep despair. Depression is ugly. Maybe he's not thinking clearly right now.

Member J.Lake had the right idea when he posted "
Hey bud i will help you out. I will hold your fish for you as lonbg as you want. I will pay for shipping and keep them for you untill you are ready for them back. I would also be willing to help you in other ways. Pm me if you need any help bro. I understand the dilema you are in."

I've never read anything from the OP prior to this call for help. Assuming his post is legit, maybe we should all act more like J.Lake.

Many are quick to attack. Few are quick to help. J.Lake - you get it and I commend you.

^what he said.
I've read RECENT posts documenting where fish "donated" to many LFS's are accepted under false pretenses, and are FLUSHED or killed other ways, due to risk of disease or the fish not being marketable.
One thing that really galls me, is EVER flushing a live fish down into a sewer &/or lying to relinquishing owners.
ANY chance at 'life' in ****ty, cruel, slow deteriorating conditions is not better than humane euthanasia, it's just passing the buck to appear as if you care about the fish.
I prefer to hope the OP will find & choose a good solution for his peace of mind and his fish's well being.

I agree with the people who said to try to find someone who can properly care for the fishes for you until you can get them back before even considering putting them down in a humane fashion. There's no sense in giving them away or selling them if they go to someone who's just going to put them in an abusive situation, e.g. stuffing them in too small of an aquarium and so on; a quick & painless death is far better than a slow & painful death in an abusive situation. I wish you the best of luck in getting things worked out, and I hope that this will all work out for you & the fishes in the end.

You are on MFK a community of "FISH KEEPERS" that would be happy to take in your fish and provide them with a home. If you don't want to donate to an lfs then don't. MFK is your best choice in my opinion. You would be able to keep track of them by just communicating to the person or people you could donate fish too. Just not wanting should be a reason to put them down. But yet again, it is your choice.

Finally somebody who's not just complaning but actually trying to HELP! :)

Ya just trying to help then seeing these amazing exotic creatures go to a waste. If the op is willing to donate let me know as I am dedicated to make the room in my 450g for them. If not at least accept J.lake's offer. If he doesn't have the room to house all I can house some and he could too. Good thing is we both live in Canada so shipping is hassle free as it's domestic.

Look at it this way. If you kill the fish, you make NO money and the fish dies which is unfair to the fish. If you sell it for really cheap you make some money (some is better than none), and most importantly the fish get to live. Killing the fish because someone may make a little money is not a good rationale. If anything, be fair to the fish, it should not matter if you make a little money or no money. Someone may make money later off the fish (or not), but atleast the fish lives.
