Should I let my FH's meet

B Bowlo if you actually want to be a part of this community (and keep your fish alive), I'd highly suggest listening to the advice of people who actually know what they're talking about.

Attacking one of the wisest people here for giving you rational advice, which evidently just so happened to severely hurt your feelings, is generally frowned upon as well.

I don’t respond much to threads but I have to say RD. Is great at giving advice and also takes his time out of his day to help people. For anyone to talk like that and treat someone that is willing to make an honest assessment and yield advice is a shame.

Thank you RD. For the time you give this forum and for helping people even if what you say isn’t what they want to hear.

PS
IMHO I don’t think it will work out in that size tank and the pleco is going to wreak havoc on you water unless you do a lot of water changes. Lots of poop with those 3 fish.

I remember years ago when i first joined these boards and RD. RD. Gave me advice the first time i thought to myself it came off as a little brash...

But after cooling off and re-reading his posts with fresh eyes i quickly realized he was literally the only person always getting straight to the point based off the information given at the time...

So i would recommend OP you do the same and just take 5... have a drink or something then come back and re-read his posts and maybe you’ll see things differently as well...

Thanks Rob, Nikki, and Homer.

Bowlo, no need to get nasty. Take a deep breath and try to absorb what I am saying.

The term low grade, in reference to a FH does not necessarily equate to ugly. You may have chosen to take it that way, and get insulted, but I never once used the term ugly, nor was I implying that. Both fish appear to be healthy, and nice looking fish. But as an example, your male in these parts would sell for $5-10, where a high quality male can cost several hundred, or more, with even entry level quality fish starting at $150.

All FH are graded by breeders before they leave their tanks and go to retail vendors. There is a massive difference between a low grade trimac looking specimen, and a AAA+ masterpiece. Even at incredibly small sizes an experienced breeder can spot the rock stars, and there are numerous things a 2" FH can be graded for, besides just the flower line, and/or nuchal hump. Determining whether either sex is fertile can't be concluded at such a small size either, but the overall grading most certainly can be. The term low grade is just that, a grading, which is common every day terminology in the FH world.

You arrived here asking what any reasonably experienced FH keeper would consider entry level questions, so in kind you were treated as such.
No need to get all bent out of shape. I have been breeding fish for a lot of years, and clearly my standards and principles, and yours, are worlds apart. Good luck.

I see absolutely no point in breeding fish that for the most part will result in producing a lot of lower quality Trimac looking offspring. Backfromthedead - do you own any FH, have you ever owned any FH? I'm just curious, as I'm at a loss as to why anyone would promote creating and circulating more Trimac looking low grade FH in this hobby?

And OP, that's not me picking on your fish, that's me telling you straight up. If you like your fish that's great, all I'm saying is keep them in your tanks, don't spread those genes around. So once you remove breeding from the equation, it obviously makes no sense to put these two together. If you desire fish that look more along Trimac lines, get some pure Trimac and work with those.

Yeah i just sold mine. He was, as you purists like to say, a "low-grade" flowerhorn. Here he is with his buddy.

It took a lot of effort to get them to cohab without killing each other. I wanted to put them in the same tank because i simply wanted two big cichlids in that tank. Never intended to breed them.

Purist? My sentiments have nothing to do with being a purist.

It has to do with this hobby of ours being plagued with fish that look like Trimac, and many being sold as just that, when in fact they are simply a low grade FH. This has been a problem with this grade of FH for the past 15+ years. So to encourage anyone in promoting this kind of breeding, to me can only be the result of ignorance on the subject, or a lack of caring about the hobby as a whole. Even today most people will tell you that the only way that you will know that you bought a pure Trimac, is if you bought it from a reputable source. For many years that involved a very limited number of US based breeders, such as Jeff Rapps, and Ken Davis. Pure lines are still very difficult to source where I live. A damn shame if you ask me, and nothing to do with being a purist anything.
