Should I rescue this Oscar??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I agree on what someone said earlier is to do water changes and use aquarium salt, it should heal up very nicely. By the way, Oscars are great fish to have, I bought mine at 10" and now he is 13" and the big man of the tank!!

Here we get large oscars from the lfs for 40.00, but that's nothing to pay for a big beauty like an oscar. They can be found in the paper to give away quite often. I personally like getting them as big guys. They do seem to move fast at the lfs here though.
How is the rescue doing anyway?
I think oscars are awsome, if you want to get your spouse into fish, get them an oscar;) ....worked for me.

He is almost completely healed! I ended up using aquarium salt only, and daily 50% water changes. His color is much richer now, he seems happy, and his move into the 90 gallon is only five days away! I've also found a name for him: Bruno.

Very cool. Watch he doesn't harass/try to kill your con and GT. I know both of those are considered more aggressive than the O but with the size difference you'll want to keep an eye on things.

Definitely will do :)

I snapped a few updated pics today. He's almost 100% back to normal! Four days til the big move.

Beautiful Oscar, I'm glad you saved the little guy, you see that kind of thing far too often and it's very unfortunate.

Yeah, much too often. And they usually have horrendous HITH, giving them a face only a mother could love.

Bruno is now happily swimming in the 90g tank with his GT and convict buddies. All are mellow and are getting along really well. Bruno has taken on a new playful personality since he got out of that hospital tank. He now loves rushing by the filter output nozzles and letting his fins flutter in the water current. He's obviously having a great time. This is what fishkeeping is about! :)

I'll try to get pictures of the new tank up soon. I'm still missing a couple of small things for the tank but it's mostly done.

Great job. The rescue and rehab of an animal is very rewarding.

All right, one last update :-)

Here are some pictures of Bruno in the new tank. As you can tell, the area above his lateral line still show some scarring, but I'm hoping they'll fill in with red scales over time. Even if they don't, he's captured my heart!

And his tankmate (and good buddy actually), "Jack"

And I uploaded a short video as well. I know the tank looks kind of bare but I'm waiting on a few plants to make it a little more colorful.
