Should I?

I know there are people who eat their dead arowana. If I raise a fish to 3 feet I definitely won't eat it.

No, most aquarium products used might be harmful

Loaded statement - it's up to the consumer (literally and figuratively) to check the molecular formulas on what he may use in raising this fish, and determine whether or not the enzyme for said chemicals is already in his possession, or if it's something his body either cannot process, or is incapable of learning how to process. Using chemicals is not the problem - which chemicals are used, that's what's tricky.

hahaha, awesome thread.
chemical problem is easily sorted- if ever xander needs to medicate the tank, and i doubt he will, the fish can be moved to another setup easily.

agreed....
BUT,if you DO decide to eat him, count me in!
ive always wanted to try gar.:D:naughty:
i BBQed one of the pbass you gave me(died on the way home).
tasted pretty good, like sea bass sort of.:D

hmm. i wouldnt have eaten that pbass though. if i'm gonna eat a fish from an aquarist's tank, i wanna know it's history and i wouldnt ever eat a fish that died on it's own.

anyone got any gar recipes? i'm thinking lemon/black pepper..

hmmm. if we go ahead with the gator... how about throwing in pacu/snakehead/big cats/...:D

this thread's got way more answers than i dreamed! in response to several issues i see on the thread...

1-chemicals. i do not and will in all likelyhood not use chemicals with my fish.

2-$$. i enjoy keeping gar, and do not mind spending money feeding it etc. i will not be able to house it once it gets to 3/4feet one way or another. so it'll either be killed or donated to a fish farm. and if i have to put it down i might as well eat it. lol.

3-emotional attatchment. this is actually the only thing that's stopping me now, and is the only thing that has stopped my several times in the past. i still don't know exactly what my feelings will be in the future, but i will only keep the fish for about 6 months before it outgrows the tank and has to be moved to alcohologist's pond, in which i won't be seeing him very much.

any recipes? i have a tankful of snakehead i won't mind eating. come to think of it, that's why i gave you one. but then again they're so readily sold in the market it won't be all that cool. i dont mind pacu thou:D

gar apparently tastes quite good if it is prepared correctly...ask brook or thousands (possibly millions) of people in central america who eat them as part of the local fare.

that being said, just make sure you don't use too many chemicals in raising the fish as this gets transferred to you when you eat the fish (depending on the specific compounds). and of course...don't eat the eggs unless you want to get quite sick.--

PS-- i had plans to do this with an arapaima but he just won't grow!!! :P

i think i actually will do it(can hear alcohol saying YES when he reads this...). and yes i try not to use any medications. maybe i'll get lucky and end up with a full grown gator gar @ 2' too;)

I would say no
you like gars as do most of us.....
plus i hear they tast extremly bad

apparently they taste good! they're also a staple diet for many ppl in mexico. yes i(and several others) love gar, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy other aspects of the fish! something i learnt from from richard. there's more to gar than looking at them swim around in a glass box.:D

if you consider getting some tropicals/letting go of that longnose then maybe:D nah just kidding. i really want to try gar meat. grilled with lemon and blackpepper sounds really good:drool: ppl eat gar meat all the time, it just that this time i have been caring for it for a while. i can never imagine eating a cuban, but only because of it's rarity. if it were common and grew larger, i would definately consider some too.
