Do less filter cleaning.
For some reason you don't have enough BB. If the flow isn't restricted don't clean it.

Sounds like way overkill on filter cleaning.
I swish my biomedia around in the filter water
before I dump it about once every four months.
During WC the filters get temp powerdown,
then powerup. I don't like doing WC
and filter cleaning on the same day
and filters only get cleaned when I notice
substantial blockage in the flow.

not to argue but i dont see how cleaning only the mech filter media matters to the bb :irked:
isnt the bb in the scrubbies and stuff?
i dont touch the scrubbies at all, just felt,in wd

i will try to clean less,i dont see how everyone doesnt keep theirs clean lol

also bump on this
i dont want to do to many wc :irked:

Not too many water changes, but how do you clean the mechanical?

if you do it with tap then that'll kill whatever is under it.

This is the only thing I can think of. I have some HOB's too and I clean them every 1-2 months. I actually only clean them when I notice they're really bad. I've also heard it's bad to rinse filter pads, you wash away the BB. Rather should be rinsed in a pail of cycled water. But I rinse because it works better to me and I have personally no ill effects.

Also how much water are you changing at a time? That will help determine your WC schedule.

I've gotten busy in life and lax with WC
I've gotten excited about the hobby and did bi-weely maint

I've seen my tanks do wonderful all by themselves for 6+months
I've seen a good natured 'cleaning' bring algae blooms and die-offs

Over filtration [which i beleive was your original question] with under maintanance has brought me the most success.

i remove the 2 felt pads
bring outside
spray clean with the hose
then replace it in filter

i figured it might remove any bb in the felt but thought the bb was mostly in the scrubbies that i do not rinse so i figured no biggy

:irked:

maybe it is getting cataminated by water in the hose.. other wise i just don't know.
