shouldnt this filter setup handle these fish?

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Midnight as above said already, you're killing the bacteria.

Also, how long do you have the carbon on the HOB? I understand you rinse it and put it back on...you should cahnge the carbon once a month at least if you want to continuosly use carbon....

"not trying to argue lol"
im not getting why you guys keep saying im killing the bb
ya i might be killing it in the felt but i thought the main bb was in the scrubbies?
:irked:

and the carbon i change every few months
i rinse a few times in between kind of thing

and heres a kicker for all of you lol

this thread started secretly as a question for 2 tanks lol :D

reason i say that is
my 240g tank is the same way!! :nilly::nilly:

if you havent seen my filter on the 240 i "thought" i had a really good filter

i clean the filters the same
do same amount of wc
its been running over 6 months
light feedings
lightly stocked, other then a 2 foot aro lol
and yet i always have amm in it
:irked:

so what could this be?

im just getting sick of hearing people not care and have crappy water
and yet fish are fine

or ya flip it and

hear people go crazy on cleaning and wc and their fish are fine

getting real ---> :irked: with fish lately :irked:

bump for above post and this :D

tested the 55g
amm went from 8+ to 4
so still bad but went down
i also havent been feeding them really
so should i do another wc tonight?
all these wc are new to me
i always thought to many wasnt good so im unsure how many wc i can do in a row
:irked:

alert most ammonia test kits dont work with prime....check their website

Q: I am using Prime™ to control ammonia but my test kit says it is not doing anything, in fact it looks like it added ammonia! What is going on?
A: A Nessler based kit will not read ammonia properly if you are using Prime™... it will look "off scale", sort of a muddy brown (incidentally a Nessler kit will not work with any other products similar to Prime™). A salicylate based kit can be used, but with caution. Under the conditions of a salicylate kit the ammonia-Prime complex will be broken down eventually giving a false reading of ammonia (same as with other products like Prime™), so the key with a salicylate kit is to take the reading right away. However, the best solution ;-) is to use our MultiTest: Ammonia™ kit... it uses a gas exchange sensor system which is not affected by the presence of Prime™ or other similar products. It also has the added advantage that it can detect the more dangerous free ammonia and distinguish it from total ammonia (which is both the free and ionized forms of ammonia (the ionized form is not toxic)).

Thats good to know. I don't use prime but that bit of info should be in a sticky somewhere.

Get the recommended test kit and see if that works properly. I agree that after several months of cleaning the mech that all of your BB should be concentrated in the bio media where it belongs.

I clean the mech with 100 percent chlorinated tap water to kill everything on it. I actually clean my felt bags in the washing machine with a 1/3 cup of plain bleach. The BB that attached to the mech are a bunch of morons and need to be killed, so as not to infect the rest of the BB with their moron genes.

Darwin would have something to say about that.

Well this is good to know if I ever start testing for ammonia.

there isnt a thread here on mfk about this?lol
seems this would be a thing some people would like to know
:grinno:

searched for a salicylate kit and found this one
looks the same to me
both say nh3/nh4
one is nessler and other is salicylate "no clue the difference, john?" :D

sounds like i will be getting a new tester soon lol
then i will compare the 2 and see if it is different
:D

Half the members on AC use Prime, I've never heard of this problem? I use prime and my ammonia tests come back clearly 0 every time.

Maybe you need a canister. From what I understand the pacus are much messier than arrows, and it sounds as if your bb just isn't able to process all that's going into the tank.
