Lookin' good everyone. I look forward to setting up my Illinois native riffle tank and adding some Illinois natives to my Chrysemys picta marginata tank. These pics give me a ton of inspiration.

How big is your tank? Ive heard that painted turtles can be aggressive towards fish.

Some can be. Mine, however, is very mild mannered and on top of that is very uncoordinated. He can hardly make a meal out of pellets. The only time he's ever eaten fish is when it's died of other causes. I'll be using small local longears, which will be slightly smaller than he is (he will max at 4.5"). This is specifically important because I don't want the harassment to be the other way around. With enough space and cover for them, I doubt there will be an issue.

However, if there is, I am capable of safely relocating the fish.

Cool so your going to stock Northern Longears in the tank, I love the Blues and oranges in them.....our Missouri Longears have more red and get a little bigger; are you going to catch them or buy them online?

Probably catch them locally, as long as the laws allow such an activity, which I believe they do. This depends on how lucky I get, as there are a lot of hybrids and many of the local ponds (all man-made) are overrun by greens. However, I know for a fact that there have been pure longears caught out of the Boneyard, which is a tributary of the upper saline branch of the Salt Fork River, which in turn is part of the Vermilion and Wabash river systems in Illinois. I'll probably be catching my specimens on the engineering quad of the University of Illinois

If that doesn't work, I'll be buying from Mr. Zimmerman if he has stock available. I'd like to avoid this, as keeping true locals would be ideal, and I'm not sure he's got longears from my area.
