the retail environment is not compareable to banks. i've been in these security rooms, maybe no one has pulled a gun but people have pulled mace and knives out and at that moment, you're not thinking about the rules that were explained to you your first 3 days of the job. The level of awareness at a bank of such a rule is way different then the retail environment.
edit: i should mention the man who pulled out a knife was already cuffed, hardly a danger to us
Walmart was right to take action, maybe not fire but to suspend. They cant send the message that its okay for their employees to try to act like action stars when someone comes in brandishing a gun. Yes it worked out this time, but what about next time at a different location? And the next time? For Walmart to celebrate these employees' actions could encourage other employees to try the same thing with possible far worse results.
Personally I think a few weeks suspension would have sufficed for the long term employees and POSSIBLY a dismissal for those with less seniority.
Don't get me wrong, I applaud these men for their actions. I like to think I would do the same thing in their situation.
Many things are a no tolerance policy. Racism, sexism, workplace violence, and the list goes on and on. Why would this violation of company policy be any different? If you watch the link I posted, the lady says she knew what she was doing was against company policy, and that she knew she would get in trouble. When it comes to endangering the lives of their patrons, I can't imagine Walmart would do anything but fire them.
