Single cichlid or pair for 55

Here's a list
I would say a gt or jack would be your best route as far as having a single or pair. The gt will make a better wetpet than the jack. Are you looking for common fish or lil less common fish?

To me it doesn't matter aslong as I'm able to find them locally. I really care about nice colours. If I had a pair of jds would it work if I bought a male and female at 2 inch? And are both better with black gravel. I currently have a bunch of colours with heavy whites. But I can switch it.

I would go with a male and a couple females if possible. I'm big on the black and whit mix. I use pool filter sand and black diamond blasting sand mixed.

My knowledge of texas cichlids is very limited. I believe they usually get between 10-12 inches. May work for a few years depending on growth rate.

Would I have to remove some of the other jacks if I bought 1 small male and 2-3 females?

I have never owned jacks, but I'm told their common size is around 8". You could definitely do a pair of them in a 55. Starting out with a male and 2-3 females is a good plan for obtaining a breeding pair. I hear they will start breeding around 4-5". You could house 5-6 JDs at 5" each, but beyond that size will require you to rehome some of them since they get more aggressive the larger they get. If you can't sex them accurately, I would buy 6 of the small 2-3" JDs and get a pair. If you end up with a second pair, you could make a decent amount of money of selling them as a proven pair (meaning they have laid eggs and the eggs have reached the wriggler stage or beyond). A third pair is highly unlikely, but if it happens, more money for you. LOL Once you do have a pair, I would look for homes for the remaining JDs since breeding JDs are very aggressive. The pair will force your other 2-4 JDs to the other side of the tank and with the reduction in their space, the remaining fish will likely beat each other to death.
