there are still some people put there that breed them and sell them, you just gotta find the right person that knows. its kind of like a drug deal basicaly even though i never herd of anyone getting busted for keeping snakeheads most people are still quiet about it. the old forum of predatory fish there was a bunch of people that breed them and sold them right on the buy and sell board. i could have gotten some dwarfs for 5 bucks a peice plus shipping but i never had the space. basically now days you gotta know the right people and get lucky.
next best thing like everyone has been saying bowfins! gets to be a decent size eats almost everything, just as hardy and i think they are very atractive even though i know alot of people would disagree and claa them ugly.
Thanks for all you input guys. I really appreciate it. I saw a picture of a large bowfin. They look impressive. But what's the best way to take care of one? Temperature, Tank size, Tank mates, etc?
Some people have suggested to go and catch one, but I live in California and I haven't heard of a snakehead "epidemic" here. So, unforturnately, catching one is out of the question...unless there are some Southern Californians that know something that I don't know
The bowfin can be kept in slightly soft to neutral ph water at 76-82 F, no problem. Minimum tank size depends on your fish but for an adult 6'x 2'x 2' would be as small as I go, don't keep them with anything much smaller than they are. watch your fingers around large ones.
