hey im not a snakehead hater. I OWN ONE! a beautiful 15 inch albino channa striata.
AND YES! ASHDAVID HAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FISH EVER. ( i have nothing against you ashdavid, like any snakehead owners, we all ENVY your collection. so let me off the hook)

i was just trying to say, its not good to brag about something illegal

and he said he was getting 3.

3 redlines in 1 tank?

if they don't kill off eachother what is he gonna do? he's gonna have to build a pond and hope his pets or children don't fall in.

i am not anti-snakehead, i love them! i got into the fish hobby because of snakeheads. i think its juss wrong getting them without researching them and being prepared for them.
i have a empty 180g tank for mine when he gets big.

also, i never said snakeheads were aggressive.(or did i?) aniwaise, my snakehead is nothing near aggressive because he hides all day, everyday and if he sees anyone getting close to the tank, he'll run into everything and trys to hide.

as a snakehead owner, i juss want others to be responsible because look what happened with the government cuz of irresponsible ppl.

also, ppl should stop filming (NON FEEDER FISH) getting eaten by a redline snakehead, its just a cruel.
hey im not a snakehead hater. I OWN ONE! a beautiful to each his own opinion!

they are ugly fish in my book, not worth keeping, and if you read my whole post, i said that there are lots of responsible owners here, but its the irresponsible ones that ruined it for everyone, i do not hate snakehead owners, but i do not believe in importing highly aggressive species...

because there's always an owner that wants their fish to be truly happy.

That being said by you guys, I appologise fully and I am sorry for going off like that, it is just lately I have been seeing so much negative stuff being posted. Please accept my appology . I have not read the posts you guys made fully!:(

Yes there are responsible owners out there, I agree. And I also agree to when someone says they are not their cup of tea, b/c everyone has thier fish that they like to keep. So superkimchiman, I was never really that upset in the first place(see earlier statement about recent negative stuff) So no need to let you off the hook!

Sqratch, yes I have been lucky enough to get a 4th barca. Again Japan has some great fish!

you know what, i think i oughta apologize to you

if you are a true snakehead lover and can house them properly then go ahead, i was simply generalizing, and i am very upset at how the channa species are getting into waters, they can come in and devestate the fish population.

they breed proficiently and i would just hate to see another lake or river devestated by these fish

if you are ready for a snakehead, then go ahead

and NO i am not an arrogant (spelled like that btw) kid who cant get one, i have no reason to get one, i like multiple species in one tank as a personal preference

To everybody, stop gettin upset at my post, i believe i would rather have a lake full of trout and pike and other gamefish

apology accepted. im jealous of your barca. =(

i put up the post to show the snakehead owner's point of view. i just thought it was wrong to brag about a redline (since everyone wants one because they are highly aggressive) i juss hope ppl would notice there are other kinds of snakeheads that are way more appealing than a redline.

but still, no hate for the redlines since they are awesome in their own ways.

i got fired up because i thought 3 redlines was a ridiculous idea.

ashdavid, i think you are one of the few ppl that are capable of keeping large channas cuz if you weren't, how would u get 4 of the 10 most rare fish in the world. =)

keep us posted on the progress of your barcas growth

I understand where you are comming from, I mean how is the drop kick that released the snakehead in maryland??? Anyone who releases aquarium fish should be put down.

I also agree with you guys when you say it is wrong to brag about a fish that you might not be able to keep for life ( In an correct size tank that is) .

BTW , just for the record I have my C. barca pair in a 650g tank by themselves and if aggresion is ever a problem I will move them to a 900g that I have as a community tank at the moment. But aggression is non-excistant at the moment.

And lil_blue, I never assume anybody to be arrogant.

superkimchiman, I just love talking to people about fish, so you have no problem with me keeping you updated on the barcas progress.

you gotta admit though. im sure til before they were illegal, not many people cared about the fish. I can see how some people might get frustrated over the fact that people are only interested in the SH now, and not before the ban.

this is kind of off-topic, but are channa asiatica legal to keep, they get 14 inches

that species appeals to me cause they stay small enough for me to house them for life, without a monster tank

Many species stay small... A common one would be Channa gachua and Channa bleheri.

Channa pleuro and Channa aurantimaculata both max at about 40cm too. Not too gigantic tanks required. I love the colours in these 2 species. The pleuro (male I suppose) develops a very beautiful blue coloration, whereas the auran is defintely colourful.

However, I'm not too knowledgeable about your laws regarding this fishes. Just recommending some of the more beautiful, yet small, snakeheads.

I have an asiatica myself. Brilliant. I like those "stripes" on the body. And those specks of irid on its body.

There's a US-wide federal ban on all Channa, Parachanna, and Ophiocephalus (old genus) species.

Yeah, even the little ones are banned in US,
I have never kept a snakehead even before the ban but that was only because I could never find the smaller species for sale at the same time I had room for them.
I have noticed a tendency for people to fall into the "forbidden fruit" routine with channas, asian aros, and piranha. I am not saying anyone here falls into that category but it seems that fish that are banned in some areas tend to get more popular in those areas, possibly for the "braggging rights" factor. It seemed there were as many piranha keepers in California as in the rest of the country combined. Seems a bit silly.

The ones in the Potomac were C. argus. In 1997 a large one was caught in Spiritwood Lake near San Bernadino, Ca.
Here is an interesting link about the argus http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/Snakehead_circ_1251/html/channa_argus.html
