So my 2 bichirs died

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All of my tanks have sponge filters and some with the heavier loads of fish have canister or backpack filters as well. All of my sponge filters are now the dual filter types, each time I clean one I rotate which one I do so as not to completely lose my bio load in them.

I'd throw an HOB on there too, also that stocking seemed pretty dense for a 10 gallon, when I grew a bichir in a ten it was just him and a leopard ctenopoma in the tank. Could have been an ammonia spike or nitrate buildup, how long has the tank been running? What are your water parameters?

did you ever get around to testing for nitrates, etc? I also think your grow-out tank was too heavily stocked/under filtered/too small of a tank to handle the waste. especially if you are over feeding to get growth.

NEVER overfeed, its the number 1 cause old death for beginners! The over feed could have caused an ammonia spike in the small tank

Another one that I've heard of happening before is that there was so much movement the bichirs became very stressed and in extreme cases died. I look at your stock and see (other than polypterus) a couple of SD and clown loaches. I've never owned a clown loach, but from I've read and seen they like to move a lot. Especially in a small size tank all the fish could have just been very stressed from movement.
