Some Like It Hot

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha, I get it.

Those are the ones that got me interested in the idea of keeping hots in the first place years and years ago. Good luck to you both.

Do you keep any hots, or does Canada have pretty strict laws when it comes to them?

I do not keep any hots, but I have been interested in the idea for a very long time now. I have been reading as much as I can and even went as far to look for a mentor recently to no avail. The nomenclature of 'hot' keepers in Canada is a strange one from what I understand, it's mostly hush-hush and whispers because of the sheer negative connotation involved in keeping venomous snakes, and this is also applicable in areas where they're not restricted. We're not as advanced or liberated as you lucky folks in PA.

As far as animal control by-laws go, it really varies across municipalities in Ontario where I live. Someone from Toronto couldn't keep them, but a person living in St. Catherines could keep anything they wanted, even primates. Contrary to legislations prohibiting venomous however, you can buy Gilas or Beaded Lizards at large conventions in Toronto - because nobody cares if some lizards are venomous, but when it comes to snakes it's a whole different book as you know it.

On an interesting side note, none of the rear-fanged species are regulated in Ontario. You can walk into a pet store and purchase a Boiga (it's happened before), or even Boomslangs if you can find one.

I personally think that Florida has it the best, a system that you can seek approval from governance if you are deemed qualified.

No permit system is by far the best. Gov has no buisiness in my home. None.

And those aint the only ones coming in. hehe

Haha, I think you pals in PA are spoiled in my opinion, at least in terms of openness about the hobby and the availability of resources. Yes, I do say this out of utter jealousy.

I personally believe that for every one of us who would use proper tools with extreme caution, there may be someone seemingly unqualified wanting to get into venomous for the wrong reasons. For an example, a kid going out to a show and buying venomous snakes with a candy store mentality to impress his friends without any sort of planning nor 'dues paid' is a bad possibility to open up. I know this hobby is enthusiastic about governing ourselves, but it does seem very possible for someone who is not ready to purchase a potentially fatal animal without grounded regulation. Just my opinion on the matter.

As far as general functions of governments go, that's a different story. Authoritative entities have a tendency or innate desire of wanting to 'tighten up' and restrict possibilities, when they should realize that they should be helping us to achieve our goals - since they're our representatives.

Pretty off topic from venomous, but now I wanted to share this video.

my views on the permit system is this, ther ehould be a permit for every animal. to make sure the husbandry needs of the animal are met

Worst idea ever. Congratz on that.

Im not spoiled(ok maybe alittle). I simply and for good reason do not now, nor will I ever trust the gov. A permit is the beginning of the end. Its an easy way to start restricting your rights. First its a $30 a permit. Then $50. Then $100. Then $400. Then you need 1000hrs of hands on for reptiles. Then 1000 for rear fangs than additional 1000 for front. Then 2 years with first hand care with the EXACT sp of animal you want. Another animal has the exact same care? Doesnt matter its a new permit, which means 2 more years. Moving? you need to get rid of your animals, then get a new permit issued. Already have a permit? doesnt matter, we are now gonna just stop issuing them, effectively meaning they are all banned. Yeah, some of these are in effect in certain states permits.

I dont care if someone buys something they shouldnt and get bit and die. I dont!! Natural selection taking its toll. The rights of many should not be infringed because of the shear stupidity of a few.

A permit system is like Communism: It looks great on paper, but those in power always find a way to screw it up.

Except communism looking good, you still got it right. LOL.
