some MORE cichlid questions....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just got rock work for the tank. I will post pics later today. Let me know what you guys think. Also when I was dicking around with my 50/50 unit, I found just a bunch of corrosion and nasty stuff like that. So I have to get a whole new lighting system. :irked:

Here it is.

I love the rock work man. I did have one suggestion though. I know it's not a commonly done thing for the tank you are setting up but I think you should add a couple fake plants in there behind the rock work. Even just a little bit of color really does wonders for the over all look of your tank. Very nice tank though. As far as what to put in it I couldn't really tell you without knowing what you already have in there but I would be careful about over stoking. It's a nice tank but if you go with some of the larger fish that you mentioned earlier then the size of the tank will limit you.

the fish in there now are temporary and were in there to move cycling along. They will be removed. I want to keep the size of the fish under 4 or 5 inches. If you know any that I haven't mentioned let me know. I was thinking about some fake plants to spice it up a bit but then I heard that there were a couple of live plants that might stand up to cichlids. Also I have heard of people growing out moss balls then sticking them under a rock to let it spread. Would that be a good idea or no? Should I add more rock? I have a couple rocks left that are not too big and would probably fit.

sand, switch to pool filter sand for leslie's pools. It is pretty cheep. Where are you getting fish from? pm me about some julies. Also try to get scientific names for all fish. This way we can help with stocking, common names can mean multiple fish and though they make look similar they can or can not mix well.

where can I find that sand? If I switch to sand now is that going to mess with my cycle. I'm like two or three days max from done.

I checked out the reef today and they showed me their tang tanks. It had some cool stuff but I think I can get stuff a little bigger and a little cheaper if I stay patient and find local breeders. Awesome store though. The guy I talked to did say that he could order pretty much anything I wanted. So I will probably get stuff from a variety of different places.

So like an excited little school boy at Christmas, I have made a list of some fish I want. I'll try to find some scientific names and post them here. I will also bring my wish list to the cookout so you can shake your finger at my list and say no no no, and then tell me what would probably work best. You might give me an A for effort though.

I am getting some Neolamps off NotoriousSway wile he's in town though.

Tank looks great! I would switch to sand too, its alittle more work during cleanings but well worth it. It looks amazing and the fish really seem to love it. Also to add make sure if you do switch you rinse the hell out of the sand first to get all the fine particles out.

Fish list in scientific terms as requested.

Julidochromis dickfeldi

Neolamprologus leleupi.

Lamprologus (Lepidiolamprologus) kendalli

Neolamprologus pulcher

I would like to do about 4 of each kind of fish I get. That is if compatibility allows it. And I'm totally open to different stuff. I just want to keep the fish under about five inches so I can have more variety in there. How many fish do you thing would be appropriate for my setup?

more girls than boys means a better CHANCE for breeding, remember in a community cichlid tank ALL things are left to chance, including breeding sucess. girl fish are not as pretty as boy fish is what im tryin to say.

Ok so heres the details: I'm a week and a half in and my nitrate and trites have already peaked and are on thier way down. Here is where they are at the moment.

nitrate 140
nitrite 3.0
hardness 140
kh 180
ph 7.0
temp 80

I know I need to raise my ph. how high should that go?

I'm going to add an airpump to get some oxygen in there.

I'm replacing that crappy powerhead with a new one.

I need to seal off the end of my filters output bar so all the pressure wont just go out one end.

still comptiplating the switch to sand. if it matters that much I'll do it. It just sucks because I invested in the gravel before i knew I was doing a tang tank.

My canister filter used to be nice and silent but now it buzzes. Any advice on how to fix it?

other than that I still need to figure out what I'm putting in there.

Feedback would be great!
