I know I need to raise my ph. how high should that go?

From what I have heard from other peoples experiences its best to leave your ph alone unless its really low, I never mess mine.

My canister filter used to be nice and silent but now it buzzes. Any advice on how to fix it?

Sounds like you might need a new impeller, the magnet can get worn down after time causing it to wiggle.

Ok. I'll look into that. It still runs fine and it's not loud but its just annoying as hell so I want to take care of that.

more girls than boys means a better CHANCE for breeding, remember in a community cichlid tank ALL things are left to chance, including breeding sucess. girl fish are not as pretty as boy fish is what im tryin to say.

This is not as true with tangs.

To get the sand, drive north past the reef, and before you get to the McDonalds near the petco, a Leslie's pool store is on the right. You can get it there 50 lbs for around 8-10 bucks. Ask for a bag of Pool Filter Sand.

you can, but it would look silly with too much rock in the sand. You mean rock as gravel, right!

I would take a lot out but the boss would not be happy if she knew all the gravel was for nothing.

Just tell her that the fish prefer sand, and that you have to do whats best for them. Once she sees it, she will be fine with it.

update:

Got a new power head that also puts oxygen in the tank (2 birds 1 stone)
Sealed off the end of my spray bar.
I'm picking up sand sometime this week.
