some MORE cichlid questions....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so I think I have baby julies. The largest female wad hovering over one. They are so small they slipped through the net and I lost track of them. I counted four total. Are julies egg layer or mouth brooders. I want to watch for the next time this happens so I can separate them. Whats normal behavior for that? I assume the others got picked off. how many fry do julies usually have?

They are egg layers. Do not separate them if they are breeding. They will most likely stop breeding. They will hid in a cave and protect them. If they had fry they will protect them. You will be over run if they are breeding. They will keep them safe.

CYCLING 101: set up your tank, get you filters going, find a fish friend that lives 10-15 min away from you ...go over with a bucket, ask nicely, open all his filters and squeeze all the sponges into the bucket, run home and dump the "PRECIOUS" stuff in your brand new tank.

It is called seeding (you "seed" the new tank with bacteria from an established setup) and I usually put fish 2-3 days after doing that into the tank.

Thanks for the info. That's a lot of help. :)

Call people like me that will give you all the seeded media you need. :D

hey would a pleco do alright in my tank?

Yes, as I see that you have one now.

Still have no camera but I did make up my dream list.

Going into my tank tomorrow -

Neolamp Brichardis
marlieri julies

What I want after that.

cyprichromis blue flash
altolamprologus calvus
altolamprologus compressiceps

is that doable?

The calvus/compressiceps will ensure that you have very few surviving fry. I love the guys. They grow really slow.

BTW... tank looks great.

so they can just grow out in my main tank then. That would be awesome.

Yeah they look cool. I'm looking at ordering some through the reef. Unless you know anyone who has some for cheaper? :naughty:

Thanks. It will look a lot better in the next few months. With more fish. :headbang2

Also remember that as they get bigger you may want to remove some, they may try to pair off after that... They will not hurt new fry from the same parents, but can overrun your tank. I had 6 comps in the tank that spawned yours. I had over hundred.

wow. that's ridiculous. Maybe I should start the sale thread now! ;)

So it went like this:
Wife- Babe can I please get this iPhone since my other phone broke?

Me- I don't know, they're pricey

Wife- I really want one

Me-I'll make you a deal. You can get the iPhone if I can match what you spend on it in two weeks on my tank.

Wife- Ummm...yeah that's fine.

stoked.

They spawn in the thousands, it's just very hard to grow them out, takes at least one years to bring them to the selling size 1"+.

By the way, those Brichardis will cause problems ;)
