some MORE cichlid questions....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I'm getting some money and I found a supplier. Here is his list. I know I want some gold heads and transcriptus. What else will go with my setup? And is there a certain number of each that I should get? Also I know some are shell dwellers, I need some good shells. Where in Indianapolis can I find nice shells?

Altolamp gold head
Altolamp sumbu dwarf
Callachromis stappersii Kashenge Red
Cyathopharynx foai Sibwesa F2
Cyprichromis leptosoma Utinta
Cyprichromis sp. Leptosoma jumbo Kitumba
Ectodus descampsii
Enantiopus sp. Kilesa
Julidichromis transcriptus
Lamprologus ocellatus
Ophthalmotilapia boops F1
Paracyprichromis nigripinnis Kapembwe
Telmatachromis dhonti
Xenotilapia bathyphilis Isanga
Scienachromis fryeri

Altolamp gold head
Altolamp sumbu dwarf - not these is you get bigger comps
Callachromis stappersii Kashenge Red
Cyathopharynx foai Sibwesa F2
Cyprichromis leptosoma Utinta- a group of these or
Cyprichromis sp. Leptosoma jumbo Kitumba - a group of these, not both
Ectodus descampsii- good choice
Enantiopus sp. Kilesa - not really great with other fish really docile fish
Julidichromis transcriptus- okay, but may cross with your other julies
Lamprologus ocellatus - although shellies are larger than some, just watch with comps get big
Ophthalmotilapia boops F1- get bigger so limit other stock if you pick these
Paracyprichromis nigripinnis Kapembwe
Telmatachromis dhonti- not a community fish
Xenotilapia bathyphilis Isanga- limit stock if you get these, they like open sand area
Scienachromis fryeri- not a good idea

Shells best place is MIchael's like a hobby lobby...

Now for the list. Stick to tangs. Then be sure to not go with all rock dwelling. Get a few open swimmers and a few rock dwellers.

Hope that information helps

thanks a lot Mike. Always helpful. How about numbers. For instance how many comp would be best of one sp. or does it matter?

Shells acquired.

So here's the plan thus far.
Hopefully sometime next week I will get the following:
3 - Altolamp gold head
12 -
Cyprichromis leptosoma Utinta
5 -
Lamprologus ocellatus

Then later on get
3- Altolamp comp fire fin
4- leleupi

Would that about do me stock wise or can I throw some black fin congo calvus in as well?

current stock
3 - neolamprologus brichardi
3 - julidochromis marlieri
1 - Albino Bristlenose Pleco

I figure my comps will be the big shows wile the rest will be the side shows with the shellies trying to take center stage.

Edit: just read some matirial online. Maybe pairs for the comps and calvs?

What kind of problems?

They are aggressive colony builders, parents and adolescents will take care of new babies. At first they'll take a corner and slowly but surely they'll take over the entire tank. When you have a hundred of those attacking everything in sight not even the Frontosas won't go close to the breeders.

Calvus and Compressiceps pairs are better.

I'll keep my eye on them. So far they have been peaceful.

Thanks I'll do pairs instead.

Thanks for the info

It's not the parents that will be the problems, it's the hundreds of babies that will reach juvenile/young adult stage that will start conquering more and more territory for the parents and new fry to have. They do it very thorough, step by step :)

I'd suggest getting some stronger lamprologines (Neolamprologus Sexfasciatus) but they might go through your other fish too easily. More Calvus of Comps? Just don't let the Brichardis get out of their corner and you'll be fine.

new plan. had to bail my car out of impound last night. $210.
So it's just the pair of gold heads this time around.:irked:
