Some of my cichlids...

What is HLLE, how can you tell he is getting it, and how do you treat it? Thanks.

The cause is argued and isn't agreed upon. HLLE is head and lateral line erosion. I can tell that the O is getting it because of his forehead. There are little dents and craters. Varied diet, clean water and good care are the only way to prevent it. Once they get it, it's almost impossible to get rid of. Some people say carbon causes it, so if you use carbon, stop.

K. Well, I do weekly 50% water changes, run an FX5 on this tank, no carbon. I feed them a variety of mostly Ken's foods... pellets, cichlid flake mix, colormax flakes and earthworm flakes. Occasionally, I add frozen bloodworms and beefheart, and on rarer occasions they get random bugs, worms, and juvies from other club members looking to decrease booming populations in their tanks.

Rich,

Our argentea appear to be similar in size, but (and I'm sorry here, not trying to bash you or anything!) mine seem to have a lot more color. These are non fancy pics taken with my iPhone:

What are you feeding? I'd be happy to help you out with any advice if you want it to get some more color out of your fish. :)

I don't think its from Carbon honestly, its usually poor water quality or just feeding them crap like feeder fishes most of the time or just 1 specific food.

It's all good, man. I listed what I'm feeding just above. Your argentae are very nice indeed! I don't take any comments as bashing. I always appreciate knowing what different people are doing with their fish, and what has worked with them, so surely, I'm open to that. But for what its worth, to anyone who chooses to comment, I'm just sharing pics of my fish, and not trying to compete with anyone. If you have a criticism and some advice to go with it, I accept that. I've been doing this for a long time... but clearly, as evidenced by the mixed reaction here... I am far, far from perfect. I feel this hobby keeps you in a constant state of learning, really... so feel free to offer up whatever you please. Thanks.
