If a fish can't swim without having to avoid other fish (due to space, not agression), it is an overstocked tank. Can you grow fish like this? Sure. Do I agree with it? Absolutely not.

not being a solo tank ( or a tank of small, shoaling fish ) is there a situation where this does not happen?

I fully understand the aesthetic argument. Some like it full some like it less so.

But in terms of fish keeping what is wrong?

PEOPLE look good on the outside but it doesn't mean they are healthy on the inside. Same applies for fish. I don't care if your filter is rated for 1,000,000 GPH the fish barely have room to move. For that amount of fish and their potential sizes they need a pond. This is a perfect example of how selfish and inconsiderate some fishkeepers are. It is more about gaining some admiration by other idiot fishkeepers than giving a damn about a living thing.

Yup I get the same responses "overstocked!" on my old stock set up too....especially on YouTube...at the end of the day the fish are healthy and it's our time and effort in maintaining it (2-3 x 50-60% wc a week and spending loads on filtration). Some ppl will never understand and the criticism will always be there...

No objective argument whatsoever, Pyramid Party. apart from calling some fishkeeper idiots and others attention seekers.

IMO doing obsessive waterchanges, having a filter with a huge turnover, and the fish simply looking healthy on the outside (not the inside) is not enough to make this right. This site promotes overstocking and people distinguish status by the fish you keep, and people will do anything to gain that admiration/status. I don't understand how people can see tanks stocked like these and think that is acceptable. I guess for most they are too caught up in trying to maintain a high status or simply aspire to be high status.

I have yet to see a valid argument ( and we are not talking ABOUT THIS THREADS TANK ) besides those of Alex.
Ghe rest is either based on aesthetics or on " very little"

What is this of fish looking good on the outside, but not in the inside? Fish are not like birds and reptiles. Fish do not hide diseases. They are either well or they ate sick.

And what has the statuts to do with the discussion? Come on, objective reasons.

Isn't there a saying a thriving and always hungry fish is a healthy fish? When I mildly overstocked my tanks my fish were always hungry and eating lots and growing fast. In my eyes thats a healthy fish. If Ted's fish were unhealthy in this 180g (growout) tank they would of never reached that size.

fish prices would rise if less people were buying... so it would be a win lose situation for ethical keepers.

Less people buying and prices go down. Basic law of supply and demand.

While I agree it is overstocked, the tank and fish look a lot healthier than many I see here. I see a lot o people with 400 gallon plus systems with cloudy water and beat up fish. Bigger tank doesnt always mean better aquarist.

The best tank I have ever seen from an individual was from a guy i worked with at a lfs. He had a 120 marine tank with 30 fish averaging 6 inches. Every angel, trigger, grouper, tang, and large wrasse you could think of. The tank was literally a wall of color and all the fish looked like show specimens. He got them all at an inch or two and grew them up together on quality food with great husbandry practices. He now owns a distributorship in San Francisco and supplies aquariums around the world. No one can say he doesn't know what he is doing.
