something I have never heard of till today

The more I am thinking about this the more I am convinced that I need to put the fry in tank by themselves. To this end I have a 20g set up beside the 180g, the salinity in that tank is at 1.004.

I have been speaking with a biologist about this. All he could direct me to do was keep a journal and pictures as there really is not a lot known about this.

The reason why I am really thinking that I will have to put the fry in slight brackish to almost fresh is because in nature the male swims to fresh water and places the fry there. There must be a physiological reason why the fish are brought to fresh by the parents to begin the life cycle. Kinda the same with salmon who swim from the ocean to go upstream to spawn.

I do not know all of the biology terms and such for this, yet, from what I have read up on it fish that are meant to be in fresh water can not live for long in sw. Following this rationale, I also have a 10g totally fresh that is set and ready to go so that if I have more than a few fry I might split them between the 2 tanks.

I think that if they fry were left in the 180 with the 3 adult sharks they would become a quick snack for one of the females. The 2 females are so intent on the male right now that they are ignoring the food I am putting in the tank which is definitely not normal.

I also have a very nice tumbler that a friend of mine made for me for this, just in case the eggs are not fully developed yet.

I was wondering for anyone that knows arowana, at what time do they strip the eggs. Any specific time frame, as I know that the baby aro usually have egg sak attached.

Have you considered moving the Male to the 20-gal? if the salinity were to slowly drop in that tank with him in it it might trigger him to release the eggs/fry. then you could divide the tank preventing him from eating the fry while also keeping him separate from the females (allowing him to eat and gain strength back).

P:S if you did this then you would want to match the salinity in the 20-gal to what it is in the 180-gal so the Columbian male doesn't go into shock then you could very slowly drop the salinity

Pretty cool man. Definitely interested to see how this turns out. I did not know they were mouth-brooding, but then again, no one knows much about breeding these catfish. There is one guy on here that had his columbian sharks lay eggs a few times, but they did not get picked up by the male. The guy put them in a plastic container to float them because the first time the eggs were laid, one of the fish ate them. As far as I know the fish laid eggs 2-3 times and they never hatched. Unfortunately I forget the guys username, but it is similar to the guy about me.

WTF are you talking about drama??????

So I should just leave one of my cats alone when it seems that it has something lodged in it's throat and not try to at least remove the obstruction.

Hey! slow your row buddy! I didn't say you did it on purpose. Of course you didn't know it had eggs you did what I would of done. I had fish actually get a suctioncup stuck in its mouth. I'm just saying I'm surprise the after all that the fish still holding its eggs that's great! hope they hatch. Your taking this way way to personal calm down.
Sorry you misunderstood my opinion as an attack. Was not ment to be just giving my opinion. Looks like you been doing more research and you should do whatever you feel like doing..

Yeh sorry Mygiants,

I have just had a few people think it was their place to take potshots and mistook your commment for such.

I am honestly both really pumped but totally at a loss with how to proceed here.

A great part of me wants to strip the fish and get some food into it because I know the other female is a few days from dropping the eggs she is carrying . As well I have many times stripped other fish with great success and figure this would be no different. If I strip the fish, I will ensure that they do not become a snack.

The other part of me has the thought that perhaps the fry will survive in the water in which they were bred.

The idea of putting the male in the 20g is tempting only problem is that he is easily 12 inches long and I just can not put a 12 inch fish in a 12 inch wide tank.

id say strip it now and see if they hatch and what kind of yield that gives you, if the female is close to dropping and you stripping the eggs works then do that with the next spawn, is stripping doesnt work then leave the last batch of eggs with the male... trial and error trial and error
