something I have never heard of till today

i think you should check the progression of the eggs. i do it alot with africans and it rarely goes bad. you have to be fast though. if you see eyes id say strip him and get the fry in a tumbler or net breeder depending on the size. i dont think you should try to let them drop the fry naturally this usually always goes wrong in my experience. plus they should be put in fresh water and it would be less stressful on the big fish if you just acclimated the eggs instead of the whole tank. the 10 gallon will probably work just make sure its heated. little col sharks do much better in hot tanks.

take more pics this is really cool!

Myself I would just let them be in the tank this time. Obviously something is right in the tank for them to lay eggs. If the eggs never hatch or the parents eat them they will surely lay eggs again. The next time you'll be more prepared. You can try something different like stripping or moving or slowly dilute the water in the tank towards more fresh. But I would just observe see what happens you never know.

Well, I have decided that I have to strip the fish and acclimate the fry to almost fresh if of course they are fry and not wigglers.

If they are wigglers I have a breeder box what I will set up near the return pipe from the sump so that there is water movement.

The main reason why I have decided to strip them and put them another tank is totally based on the fact that in nature the fry are put into fresh by the dad. From what I looked at to make this decision I really think that I should repicate nature as best I can.

I have a 10g in my back area that I have had 2 small goldfish in for about a month so it should be completely cycled and ready. Alas the 2 smalll goldfish have decided to swim in the 300g with snake the florida softie.

I will have the helpful albeit bad camera skills of my daughter to assist with the procedure tonight. I have to admit as well the second female having eggs made my decision for me. If I can get the male to eat and brood the second batch of eggs all the better.

Pics to come in approx a hour or so.

I have to say that dilution of the 180 would lead to some very serious water quality issues as it is a full on sw tank and most certainly I would kill off all the micro organisms in the live rock.

Even further all my studies of brackish fish breeding have come to the same end. The baby fish are always brought to fresh water by the parents and begin life in that spectrum of water and end up in brackish to full sw as adults.

The more I looked at this and studied this, the more I came to the conclusion that these baby fish are not biologically or physiologically geared to survive in full sw to high brackish conditions.

Well here I go off to strip search a fish. CALL ME THE FISH COP

Sounds like you got a plan. I would document everything you do. Document your current water parameters so you can maybe duplicate it in the future. Since there really isn't any info on breeding these fish you may establish some useful info for anyone trying to breed this fish. Good Luck keep us updated on whats going on.

I have no experience in this but if it were me I would move all of your other fish to the 100g and leave the sharks in where they are and try lowering the salinity in that tank. It would cause less stress to them I would think.
this would be my steps to take.. everything is a quess..but this one seems the best quess of all...

Yeh sorry Mygiants,

I have just had a few people think it was their place to take potshots and mistook your commment for such.

I am honestly both really pumped but totally at a loss with how to proceed here.

A great part of me wants to strip the fish and get some food into it because I know the other female is a few days from dropping the eggs she is carrying . As well I have many times stripped other fish with great success and figure this would be no different. If I strip the fish, I will ensure that they do not become a snack.

The other part of me has the thought that perhaps the fry will survive in the water in which they were bred.

The idea of putting the male in the 20g is tempting only problem is that he is easily 12 inches long and I just can not put a 12 inch fish in a 12 inch wide tank.

He wont be worried about comfort he'll just be happy to get a break.. at least that's how I would feel haha.

Ok I got the fish ok, when I opened his mouth to take a look they were still eggs. So I gently got 2 out which I have put in a tumbler in the 10g. I also bumped up the salinity in the 10g so it would run about 40% of what is in the 180g.

Then I put the male back in the 180g and will let things play out as they will in the 180g.

If the females eat any fry that come so be it.

The 2 eggs that I put in the tumble have a white dot off center. Though I can not actually see any fry inside. Really depends how long it takes for fry to form from the eggs, or if the eggs are actually fertile.

So far as I can tell the male still has 3-5 eggs in its mouth. I took some pics today which I will upload when I get home.

Now the ? I have for anyone in the know is this.

What is the time frame for eggs to go from laid to hatch with a scenario like this?
