Something wrong with florida gar.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is there any chance this could have been caused by the water change itself. Meaning a difference in temperature with the new water being poured in. I'm not saying it's the case, but maybe there was a big drop or spike if the temperature was off and caused a sudden shock in the Gar. Did you make sure the water temp. was about the same?

The temp of the incoming water was no more than 1-2 degrees different than that in the tank. Since I only saw this behavior during/after the water change, I am assuming it probably has something to do with it. Maybe he was sitting right where I dumped the dechlor in and got a gulp of it and I didn't notice, maybe he spazzed out and hit himself on the glass when I was in the other room hooking the hose to the faucet. I'm not sure what happened and probably won't find out.

I'm just hoping he's better when I get home and I can add him back to the tank.

Just checkin back, is he eating? The live food you fed him, was it quarantined?

I'm not home from work yet (another hour to hour and a half). The feeders were not quarantined, but all the other fish in the tank ate the same feeders, so I'd think they would have issues as well. I don't usually quarantine feeders anymore, since I only get them about once every 4-5 weeks.

Oh well regardless, hope he makes it out ok. That's always a stressing situation... G/L!

I'm willing to bet he hit himself on the glass. My Florida gar did the same thing after a water change and acted weird for about a day, but it recovered just fine.

That may be the case.

Well I've been home for almost an hour. He seemed much better when I got home, and moved around the styrofoam container when I disturbed him. I watched him for about 15 minutes, and he seemed to be breathing normally and wasn't doing any of the twitching he was yesterday.

I then scooped him up with a net and put him back in the tank. He laid on the bottom for about 15 minutes, and then swam up to the surface to gulp some air. He is now swimming around pretty much normally, although he stills seems a little shaken.

I'll keep an eye on him over the next couple of days to make sure he keeps improving and returns to normal.

Thanks for all the well wishes and advice, especially to Peje. I'll have to remember to try putting them in a shallow container of water if I have problems in the future.

I'll keep this thread updated if I see any changes.

Thanks everyone! Here's hoping he has a complete recovery...

Good to hear it recovered fine.

Thanks for your advice.

He is still swimming just fine this morning, looks almost completely back to normal. Still not sure what went wrong, but at least he came out of it ok.

Glad to hear!
