well i set up my new 60 gallon and let it run for 3 days, i went and got some fish and i woke up this morning and 4 of them were dead!!!! i have a magnum 350 filter on it and it says its good up to 100 gallons, so its not a filtering issue. whats weird is all the fish are staying at the top of the aquarium, and it looks like there trying to breath air like they put ther mouths out of the water and you see there gills going, i have never seen that before. now i dont know if this is waht caused it but when i was puting the filter in about 3 pebbles of carbon fell in the tank, i only could get to one. but i got the other 2 out this morning, is that whats causing it? when i got the aquarium i combined my 2 tanks (10,and 14 gallon) and then got more fish. can anyone help?? i fed yesterday half a cube of emerald entree, and half a cube of bloodworms. and they ate it all. so i dont know whats going on.

heres the fish i have:

from the 14 gallon:
angel fish
striped neon
golden kille

from 10 gallon:
red tailed shark
bottom feeding catfish
angel fish

and i bought:
7 neons
rainbow shark
ghost knife fish
4 tiger barbs
2 kissing guramis
2 other guramis
3 mollys
1 sucker fish

i combined all of them i put the first 2 tanks in after 2 days of filtering, adn the other fish the next day.

the dead ones:
rainbow shark
ghost knife fish
red tailed shark
bottom feeding catfish
and im missing 3 neons

so can anyone tell me waht is wrong. the waters looking a bit cloudy. im going to get some declouder. and return my dead ghost knife, and rainbow shark. so someone help please!!!!!!

thanks guys!!

Ummmm.....i think your 60gal is not cycled yet.

Do you still have the filters from the smaller tanks?

yea i do. im pretty sure the waters good becaue we have a 2000 dollar filtration system in our house that filters all the houses water. so i wasent worried about the cycling of the water.

and i just got word that my other angel fish died.

the tanks not cycled you need to let it go longer with no fish and only put some feeders or a cheap fish of some sort in there for another week or two! and you can use your old filters to speed up the process!

i forgot to mention all the fish are about 3" long or less except the dead red tail shark, the live angel, and dead angel. everything else is small so i didnt think they would eat each other. there all getting around nicely except the guramis are picking at each other. dont know if that has anything to do with anything.

thanks guys!!

have you checked your parameters? it sounds like you havent cycled and ther ammonia levels are making your fish gasp for air. the ammonia is burning their gills so in a final attempt to breathe they are gasping at the surface. you may have already caused irreversible damage to your entire stock

aww man. the lady at petsmart told me it only had to be cycled for 2 or 3 days. crap. what should i do about the fish that are in it now??

and the knife most likely ate the neons. or it could've been the "bottom feeding catfish". you may wanna look into what yuo stock more specifically next time. all cats are bottom feeders, so this doesn't tell you what to expect from this cat. it could be anything from a pictus which would grow less than 8 inches, to a TSN which would outgrow your tank in no time. the latter would also eat your whole stocklist.

Just add the filters you had in the smaller tanks in to the 60gal. Like i said I don't think your tank is cycled yet. There are no Beneficial bacteria (bb) in the new tank yet.
