Somewhat Rare Rescue

So he has to get this gold one to mate with a regular one to get fertile regular JD that has the gold gene.

Then you have to get a EBJD to mate with a regular JD to get a fertile regular JD that has the blue gene.

Do you repeat this again with line breeding, or do you just put the two fish with off colored genes together to get a Stonewashed EBJD.

Thanks Modest Man for all the great info. By the way nice save.

That would work, but it would take much longer and require you to be able to isolate normal looking JD's that carry the double recessive genes.

So the F1 would be EBJD X regular = AABb Gold X regular = AaBB Cross those two and you'll just end up with all wild type JD's (1/4th AABB (normal), 1/4th AaBB (recessive for gold), 1/4th AABb (recessive for EBJD), and 1/4th AaBb (recessive for both))

You'd then have to figure out a way to tell apart the F2 AaBb JD's from the rest (you'd only have a 1/16th chance of getting two double recessive fish to pair up) and breed the F3 generation to end up with what I posted earlier, 1/16th of the spawn would be homozygous recessive for both.

As I said eariler, I'm fairly certain Gold X EBJD would result in a fertile cross, (which would be a much easier line breeing situation) as you wouldn't have the EBJD X EBJD problems as the gold color mutation is (almost certainly) different than the EBJD mutation. You can cross gold X gold no problem.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to try and see if I can do some breeding with this guy and see what happens. I will make sure to keep everyone posted on the results of any successes. At what point (length) do you think jd's are most likely to start breeding. Never really done any breeding before, so this would be helpful info. Also, if anyone has any other tips for successful breeding with them, that would be great as well.

fish are pretty...

no serioulsy great info on genetics... image if they used fish in high school instead of plants, many of the people on this site may have totally different careers... I may have stayed in the science program instead of a social studies teacher...

nice save by the way... any updates? eating healing?

Yes, I am going to try and get the gold to breed with a blue to get the rare genetic output Modest Man described. Now to find a electric blue that is about 5 inches and not pay out the wahzoo for it...

As far as th fish goes. He is eating, though not really attacking the pellets like I see most cichlids do. He seems to be eating them when the HOB filter forces them down. He is taking in enough to be healthy, which shows signs of improvement, but he would have trouble keeping up with tankmates at this point. I haven't seen much dorsal fin regrowth to this point, but I have noticed the rip through his tail are merging together again and some length has been added. I think he had it really rough and needs some patience to heal fully, but everyday he gets better, and I think he is going to be fine soon.

Still seeking advice on getting jd's to breed however, as I have never done it before...

P.S. any additional considerations with the electric blues and golds would be very welcome.
