Hello; For some folks the best parts of their lives turns out to be the teen years. Things can and often do take a down turn when we reach the age of majority. I started mostly being on my own at 18 and was completely on my own by 19 back in 1965-66.

Things have changed here in the USA it seems. Now kids must stay at home until age 26. At least the parents can keep them on their health insurance until that age so far. This has become a big deal in the current health insurance debates. I did not get any form of health insurance until I was 27 or 28. I had to take care of my own bills until then.

You might not wish away this time of life too strongly.

I too was on my own 18/19, back in 2006ish. Been on my own since.

Wow, 65-66!!! What a time. The Munsters, Gilligan, color tv, the beginning of the muscle car, ...how did you miss the draft??

Yesterday darts in our bar, first practice for teamtournament this saturday. Too much beer so kind of flushed out @ home now. Need to keep alive today for the Europe League football match of my team Ajax vs Lyon. And sunday is their championship duel, hopefully Feyenoord screwes up again like last week. Rollercoaster life haha

It's not bad but this time of year isn't great either. Exam stress is rough plus sick fish I'm worried about, but most of the year is nice.

Made my parents dinner with my siblings for the 20th anniversary too

Exam stress is so temporary, though. Do try to enjoy this time in your life. It will get much more stressful. That is not to say that it won't get better - but there likely will not be a more care free point in your existence.

I too was on my own at 18. I put myself through school, although looking back I'm not sure how at times. I graduated with an engineering degree in 2015. It was a very hard four years for me. I was under the impression that when I graduated everything would be better because I'd have a real job and real money. The first year was great. This year has started very poorly for me. I am doing well with my job and financially, but a real job and real money do not make happiness. I was not crazy about grades 9-12 (high school here in the US) but I do find myself missing that time in my life quite a lot.

Yeah I understand. Life is life :)

We are actually doing a poem in Afrikaans about the transition from young times to the stress of later on

Well done! Jobs are weird, I hear many say you must find a job that makes you happy and makes you money.

I'm enjoying grade 10 here because now we can choose our subjects, I have some of the hardest but I'm trying nontheless. I'm also going to do an agriculture practical and theory course in the next year. A distant family member is a very successful commercial farmer and is going to teach me some important stuff :D

Today I'm also finally going to get medication for my polypterus. My dad also said he'd buy me a filter for my small tank :)

I also enjoyed when we got to start choosing our own courses of study in high school. Oddly enough, I was focused on the humanities and had strong interests in history and law at that point in my life. I got very involved with politics (or as involved as I could be at that age) and was even selected to travel to mock congressional events at places like Harvard. I took a lot of history, debate, and government classes.

When I got to university, I ultimately decided that I hated politics. I love history, but felt that pursuing a degree in it might not take me where I wanted to go in life. While I was trying to decide what I wanted to do, I got a poor grade on a calculus exam. It pissed me off, and I dove head first into math. Four years later and I had a minor in mathematics and a very math intensive electrical engineering degree. It is funny how life works sometimes.

Hope your polypterus recovers from whatever it is that it is suffering from.

Today, I am working on designing a drive system for an automated gauge that will check automotive parts cut by CNC machines. I took tomorrow off to take my new puppy to the vet to get her second to last round of shots.

...how did you miss the draft??
Hello; Actually I did not miss the draft although I di not serve. I was injured during football practice during my sophomore year. I recovered but an underlying medical issue was discovered that would require surgery to correct properly. As it did not affect my day to day life I lived with it, but no more football.
After graduating high school I went to college and was deferred for that. Soon after getting my undergraduate degree I got my draft notice. I reported for the cattle call type medical exam and all. The unresolved medical condition was an issue. The army sent me a letter basically ordering me to get the surgery and report for duty. I did not have medical insurance nor the money to pay for such a surgery. My father in-law at that time got his lawyer to write a letter suggesting that if the army wanted me that they take me and pay for the surgery themselves. The army declined and classified me 4-F. Sometime in the late 1970's I got insurance thru my job and had the surgery. By then the draft and the Vietnam war was over.

Hello; Here is something that should be a positive about being a 15, 16, 17,18 and 19 year old guy. That is 15,16, 17, 18 and 19 year old girls. Here is the USA girls under 18 in most states are off limits to guys 18 or over but 18 and 19 year old girls are just fine anyway.

Unless you have to kill a lion with a spear or something to prove your manhood, this can be a good time of life. Back in my teen days guys my age had to get drunk and do some really stupid things. We had to smoke tobacco and shoot guns without any hearing protection. Birth control pills had not happened yet and the "free love" era was not "happening" yet.

The muscle cars were getting started and I did get to see them all as new cars. Never got to own one however. One friend's dad have a 65 GTO in which I had several memorable rides with strong pucker factors. Another joined the Navy and came around with a 67 mustang fastback that had a 390 and a four speed. One had a 68 Pontiac Firebird with the 350 HO engine and highway gears. It would approach 130 mph and did so a few times on public roads.
I recall the spring or summer of the year I graduated high school going to Louisville KY to take a scholarship exam. I stopped by a Ford dealer and drooled over a Cobra. It was the model with the 260 V-8 I think. They would not let me drive it which was very wise of them.
I never had a really fast car, but did manage to get a good driver. One of the local coal mine operator's sons had a 1972 Porsche 914. He wanted to get a Ford Pantera so he sold me the 914 at a reasonable price. Even so it was a big stretch for me. This was back when the Porsche cars were not so fancy. Weighed just a bit over 2000 pounds with maybe 80 HP. Not quick to accelerate but you did not have to slow down so much for the curves. I kept it for 12 years and only used up two motors and two transmissions. Eventually rusted too much.

No spear chucking in my neck of the woods, fortunately. It was certainly a great time in my life. I have never had a fast car myself, although my first vehicle was a 1962 plymouth valiant in ~2009. It looked great, and while in its time it was a cheap and slow grocery getter, it proved to be just odd enough to make it very popular when I had it. Helped me land a German foreign exchange student - a proud endeavor. I never had to get drunk or shoot guns, but that hasn't stopped me from doing it yet. I am still very young and do enjoy girls, birth control pills, and everything else that comes with the territory, but the high school years were no doubt easier.
