Southern Ontario goldfish invasion

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
...and if you dont know how to take care of one dont get one it should be that simple...

Totally agree. The world would be a better place if this simple logic were applied by everyone planning on getting a fish, a dog, a cat...or a child, for that matter. But, of course, there's little chance of that.

jjohnwm jjohnwm Im glad you agree petsmart sells oscars and other big cichlids and every time I go to pick up fish food and see they have sold out the oscars I can only hope some made it into something bigger than a 10g

sooo update in the original pond I only found juvenile goldfish which I found strange so I looked around town and found what I believe is the "source" It is a smallish drainage pond I could see thousands of babys is shallow pockets many still had the gold morph so I netted several times and pulled out an average of I would say 5 fish per scoop nothing but gold fish no evidence of any other speices most drainage ponds in the area are rich in biodiversity with multiple speices of sunfish catfish carps and minnows the problem is the way our drainage ponds are setup are they all lead into creeks and rivers which is how they got into the local lake it frustrates me that I am the only citizen that is aware or at least cares I talked to the people who released them an they claimed they released them to get rid of mosquitos when mosquitos are not the only speices that will suffer do to peoples ignorance the local fish will suffer Ignorance really does kill

I live in the Great Lakes region, and someone caught an Oscar, and tilapia but in a different place. Obvious the Oscar was a old pet. But it appears there’s a pond in northern Indiana that has some tilapia in it.

I live near waterloo and up until recently the ponds and rivers near by have been prime fishing spots and a easy source of duckweed and hornwart for aquariums;) but within the past year someone has released gold fish into a local drainage pond and the drainage ponds here all connect. so at one of my favourite carp and catfish spots I found a bubbling churning wall of thousands of baby goldfish eating their way inwards through duckweed eating several inches an hour. this is so damaging to native fish and wild life and hits to close to home for me as a fish keeper and fishermen I feel that if proper fish care was as well known as caring for a dog or cat this issue would not have happend no doubt it was some one who got a pet gold fish from the fair which is a terrible idea would you sell live puppys or cats as prizes? some of them dont even make it home with people and end up in a garbage can left to die
due to people ignorance and lack of understanding this is becoming a huge problem and in the near future I have nio doubt goldfish will be banned like snake heads where and ruin a huge part iof the hobby because of people who dont understand how cool and fascinating fish keeping can be Im sure their are some people on here who feel the same way also the town is not doing anything

Has anyone else had issues with gold fish? let me know I will try to upload videos and or pics
Not a goldfish problem but a friend went fishing in a local lake and caught a venustus

I just think all of this could have been avoided if general fish care was somthing everyone knows like care for a dog or cats
Ummmm have you seen the issues around the world with packs of stray dogs and cats? My neighborhood has an easy 20 random cats just strolling the streets. Cats should not be allowed outside of your home without some sort of containment. Don't get me wrong I have 2 cats and love them very much. They don't go outside. I love dogs too. I'm not bagging on them. But cats are killers and are very damaging to an ecosystem. People are people most don't know how to take care of any pets let alone themselves. So your theory of general care of fish like cats and dogs fixing the issues, I think that's where we are at right now. "Let it outside so you don't have to be responsible!"
I've actually had a neighbor tell me I'm a bad person because she hasn't seen my kitties out playing with the other cats in the area. " They look sad in the window watching the others play". I realized that this wasn't someone who would get the idea and scope of the damage 1 cat can do in an ecosystem that doesn't understand this type of predator. So I went the other route I said " well tbh they don't look half as sad as the two I've seen in the last week smooshed on the main road 200' away". I'm thinking she's not going to talk to me anymore.........

You just made me spit out my metaphorical coffee. Cat's got loose on Marion island to control the mice in the 1940's, ended up eating half a million seabirds a year instead.

twentyleagues twentyleagues so I have 3 cats and our first cat a farm rescue actually crawled into my moms colleges car engine and she drove 30min with out noticing the cat got significant burns and we adopted her then we got two more they all have weird story's but back to the point since our first cat was an out door farm cat when we got her if we tried keeping her inside she got very stressed and anxious and would pee around the house our other two are fine though so we would rather her be inside but their is not much we can do she does not really leave our yard anyways I think due to an incident with coyotes

Ignorance from people who release pets, or let them roam free is a bad thing, and poses terrible environmental damage worldwide.
A big problem, no doubt.
But there are bigger problems that are sanctioned at higher levels - Regional or country wide policies that allow (or fostered) the introduction of species for very poorly thought-out reasons, or with very poor or no consideration to effects on local communities. Growing up in South America, as a kid, I witnessed Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia, an omnivore/carnivore), Tilapia rendalli (mostly herbivorous), rainbow trout, Asian and Israel carps, and others being introduced for recreational fishing with devastating effects on natural aquatic communties. Many streams now harbor little fish fauna other than introduced species. The same has been done in other regions of the world, every time sanctioned at the level of state and country level policies.
Among other problems, introduced species outcompete, displace , or plainly consume natives almost everytime, not only fish, sometimes modifying the aquatic systems in such a way that they don't even support the species that were introduced.
A very complex problem.
