It is possible to tell gender at 3-4".
The females will "most likely have some darker areas in the dorsal fin, males will not. Mine first spawned when the male was only 4", female barely over 3", but they wren't experienced enough to keep the spawn viable.
In the phone photos below they were fairly young, and the female had tones of black.
and below is what I believe to be a 2"- 3" female from one of their spawns.
