Sperata sp. grow out thread.

Thought it would be interesting to note that I moved the suncats back into the 100 gal tank with some apprehension since the sperata is in there. I thought fight for sure since the suncats are semi aggressive and sperata are reported aggressive. At first they seemed to be trying to school together. Now it seems that since the suncats are well rested they are trying to oust the gentle sperata. Hopefully this bullying does not continue or I will have to think of a new plan..... maybe rush the set up of the 40 gal. Blah!!!

This vid was supposed to be me feeding all the cats in the 100 gal, but nosey is very aggressive at feeding time even during the middle of the day. My new strategy is going to be to feed him during the day and feed the others at night. That way he is already full and the slow to react granny, and suns will be able to feed a lil more. :) It is also interesting to note that right now his diet is pretty much sinking cichlid pellets and a high protein sinking algae wafers. I think he prefers the algae to the cich pellets lol. No aggression towards any other fish so far, but does have some damage to fins probably caused by the territorial sun cats. He mostly just ignores them as if he knows he could destroy them. He will swim straight between them while they bite his sides and tail and not even flinch.

This fish is awesome. Easily one of my favorite monster catfish of all time. Personality is top notch. Eats and grows like crazy. :) it is roughly 13.5" currently and about 3" thick! Nosey is getting big fast. One of the most curious fish i have ever owned and never freaks out!

Good news. What's the growth rate month-by-month more or less since you had it? It had come at ~5" (and a bit roughed up), right?

Nice fish.

I got one in Oct 2011 at 35 cm. The store had 2 in a 225 litre tank with lots of other fish including several young Phractocephalus hemiolopterus and several other species. The owner claimed he had it for a 2 year period. I put it in a 680 litre tank for quarantine and to get it used to my water and experiment on foods it would take. In time it took several different sinking pellets, cocktail shrimp, herring, mackerel, smelt, trout, tilapia etc. Then I put it in my 56,000 litre (15K g) until July of this year when I did some work in the tank when it was moved to a 1800 litre. It measured 58mm in July. While it does not give you a month by month growth rate it does give you the growth achieved over the 22 month period I've owned this one.

Thanks much, Michael! Do you know the species ID of the one you are talking about? Here, we could not decide on which one of the three speratas Necro's is. Hence, the thread title.

23 cm in 22 months is ~1 cm a month on average. Sounds like Necro's been growing much faster. Could be the age factor, or a different species, or differing keeping/feeding/etc. conditions entirely.

Tell us more about this fish that may be of interest. Did it compete for food well with the loads of its tankmates in your 15,000 gal?
