Spirulina

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep gelatin would be it. This is just part of their now diet of mainly nls. I want to swap it with the zoo med flakes. Too messy

I noticed that too after i posted.

This would probably be fed 2 times a week.
Think that high of a fat content would be an issue if fed only a few times ?

I don't know about the health concerns surrounding fat given to fish...but fat could be an issue with vegetarian fish not physiologically able to process it. I'm sure it isn't toxic by any means, but maybe the food is more species specific?

Even algaemax has fat in it. But yes 13% does seem high. I'll just leave thing be for now.

Zoo Med used to make the spirulina 20 as a stick. Been discontinued for a while now and it was outrageously price in little tiny tubes.

Whats size wafer are you feeding tour big girl now ? How big is she now ?

I've always noticed algae waffers bringing out great color in my cichlids, blues and greens.

High fat content is always an issue with fish kept in captivity. That recipe looks similar to the HBH "soft & moist" pellet that they make, or used to make. (I believe that formula is now discontinued) I asked an HBH rep on a public forum about the excessive fat level when that formula first came out several yrs ago (they were handing out free samples on cichlid-forum) and he pretty much ignored my question/concern, even when confronted with a study involving cichlids and dietary fat levels that was performed at the University of Florida. That study suggested keeping dietary fat levels below 10%, even for piscivorous species of cichlids. FYI - 13% would also be the min value, so probably closer to 15% on average, which IMO is too high for any cichlid kept in captivity, unless only fed in limited quantity.

Was hoping you would chime in. Im just looking to provide a little more variety.

Lately been lazy just feeding a mix of theraA and algaemax. But really cant find a better food. I should add more kelp pellets i have. Somewhere

My green terrors are addicted to ocean nutrition cichlid vege pellets. They would not go near them 6 month ago. Dropped a few in a couple of weeks back and now they can't get enough of it. Haven't seen them enjoy a pellet as much as these. Apparently spirulina and garlic. Nice and cheap too

Nice and cheap for a reason, main ingredient is wheat, 3rd ingredient is wheat, 4th ingredient is soybean meal. An ingredient list won't tell you everything, but it's always a good place to start an investigation.
