I you have never rode dont even think about getting a 1000 GSX-R

A 600 GSX-R would be best, but if you can take it easy...a 750 GSX-R

I just sold me 01 750 GSX-R after having it 3 years.....Very fun, and FAST bike....
Dont go nutts, it will toss you on your ASS...I would stay away from the 1000 and avoid the NEWBIE mistake! I am now upgrading to a 05 1000 GSX-R after 60k+ miles of ride time.....Im also 6'1" 220lbs.....If your a smaller guy.....a 600-750 will will be ideal for a long time.....

600 your be happy for a year....You can sell it and get 90% back and put it towards something bigger.....
750 would be a good bike with a lil' room to go, but less forgiving....

1000 for a newbie....only see one outcome....another trashed bike.

Dont buy NEW...buy a USED one! Save a few bucks, and INCASE you dump it....Your not out an ass load.....

My 2 cents...but Ive been there...

Do not get a 1000cc as your first bike unless you want to end up on your ass. Todays current 600's are making as much if not more power than liter bikes did ten years ago. I have a '01 zx6r with some mods done to it. I am 6'4" and weigh 230lbs and the bike screws. I have ridden bikes since I was 14 years old and I've had the 600 for 4 years and still not tired of it. You also have to consider how much more insurance will be on a 1000(especially after you rack it up). You should really get a '00+ 600, ride it for a few years and then see if you want to go up to the next class. 600's are also more agile than the liters. Are you planning on track days? Riding in the twisties? or being one of those meatheads doing wheelies down the expressway?
I am not trying to bash you but I've had to pick up too many friends at the hospital who bought liters as their first bike and did not respect the power these machines have.

I'd also look to get yourself in MSF: http://www.msf-usa.org/
Well worth the money and saves $$$ on insurance.

Good luck.

i have to agree work your way up. i crashed my first bike and most people do but im also guessing you have motocross experience and if this is the case and you know how to ride then why not. just be damn careful. its always the guy who bought his first bike too big that crashed it in a bad way

Hi I have had loads of bikes over the years when I left school id did 2years in a motorcycle shop as a apprentice mechanic then 2years as stores manager I left to get a proper job that actually paid money. I have seen many people walk of the street and get a big bike then seen it in bits and them on crutches. Riding a bike on the roads in England is and can be interesting to say the least. If you have little experience of big bikes please get the 600 it will be quick enough to start and give you some time to learn about using it on the road. Most of all will give you an insight into what people can be. If you get the 600 do some track days on it there fun and you will get to know the bike better. The picture is my last bike XJr1200 running 50Bhp Nos.

Have you rode a dirt bike? If so, dont even consider a 600.

I max my 600 out in speed every time I ride it. I wish I had gotten a 1000 and didnt listen to all the idiots when they say "get a 600 you will kill yourself!"..

turns out, im a better rider then 90% of those idiots.

Dont look at a bike based on its power to weight ratio. When you are going to buy one, go sit on them, see which one feels most comfy to you. Pick the one you feel best on. I like the Gsx1000r more than their 600.. it feels better.

If you are a new rider all around, have never been on a bike, I would then recomend you get something older for a few months.. or weeks first. to learn the ropes... that way you dont drop your new GSX1000R and then have to spend 500-2000 in new **** to replace it. Get a peice of **** bike for like 500-1000 or a dirt bike and just ride the hell out of it. A new rider will drop a bike 75% of the time.

If you have had some dirt experience, go for the 1000... dont **** around with a 600.

"work your way up" is stupid. If you know the basics and can handle a bike. size wont matter... the only difference with the 1000 and 600 is power. If you dont want to go faster, dont turn the throttle. Its common sense.

Do you know how fast the new 600s are? THey are almost just as fast. Only difference is top speed and a SMALL fraction of acceleration. I can take and or match the 1000s under 2002 with my 2003 600RR on a drag. there is not much difference with a 600 and 1000.

self control is what the problem is. Not his experience level. He needs to know his place and not hit the throttle when coming up into a corner..

Common sense is all you need.

get the 1000.

Yes, you are right in that aspect....but all it takes is one wrist slip, or cut off in traffic, or murphies law....one twist and that bike is gone....trottle response ona 1000 is not forgiving as a 600, so you better be ready for that monster, cuz it will toss you so quick....

My vote would be go for the happy medium and get the 750 like I did....Its a all around good bike and easy to learn on and a lil more forgiving....600's are for little people, newbies, and girls to start with.....a 1000 is a bit too much for a new driver....not only are you learning the bike...but your learning how to ride in traffic and deal with the otehr 99% of the idiots on the road....THAT DONT CARE ABOUT RIDERS!

But whatever you get...dont get anything new...get a used one...salavge/stunt bike....ride it learn it then go from there....
