spotted gar OR flordia gar???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is Definitely a spotted gar, if you notice the pattern on the and and dorsal area of the fish, it is completlet marbled. Florida gar have a solid dorsal area.

I've come to learn that there are no Spotted Gars. Everything on here is a Florida Gar, especially according to Solomon.

Even my Gar that's I've had for about 5 years was thought to be a Spotted Gar until Solomon IDed him.

hmmmm no spotted gars on here at all you so wrong want to see a pic

I also have 2 babies I am growing out to go in this tank

do we have to go over this???
god guys its simple. Unless ur gar is wild caught and you know the locality of were it was caught, then there is a 99% chance it is a florida. Pattern can not id the fish!! it helps when bigger but not when small. Pattern alone WILL NOT WORK. So what that ur LFS called it a spotted gar. There is a pic on here some were of a 30"+ gar in a LFS that was a longnose and the LFS calls it a spotted gar because of all the spots.
LFS GET IT WRONG!!! a lfs i went to recently had a heujta labeld as alligator gar. HMMMMM, not even close. Please do not start this arguement again!!!
and chef, what i see is most likly a florida.

well tell you what, what you see if a fish that specifically ordered in for the royal saskatchewan museum and is 10 years old and I can assure you it is not a florida gar as the museum was very precise in getting exactly what they display. I would suppose the museum staff know the difference between a florida and a spotted gar I just wish I knew how to spell the title of the museum staffer who built this wing of the r.s.m. I just don't want to mispell it lololol

:ROFL::ROFL:
in all fairness LP was talking about lfs and home aquarium gars rather than museum ordered gars.

james, i have to say for a 10yr old gar it looks tiny. can't be much larger than 12" if it's in with the hujeta(or whatevr it is i really couldn't care less). eitherways the museum has some bad taste in tankmates:grinno:

it is definitely tiny I just took over the tank contract in april the previous person did not really do a good job and the fish is very much stunted due to bad bad bad water I did a thread here on the museum tank you can find it by lookin in my profile. though on the bright side it looks to me like the gar has put on 1/2 inch growth in the 2 months since I took over.

they gave me the task of making the tank more publicly appealing so I added my needlenose gar and 2 knifefish and 2 ripsaw cats I am growing out the two baby gars that I dont know if they are spotted or florida. I just dont want to put them in yet cause they might get eaten.
