Starting 20K+ gal koi pond/water garden project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, but stuff is moving slowly right now. We've had less than an inch of rain since the pond was put in (of course). I've run in some water from the hose, but I'm a bit afraid of burning out the pump if I try to fill it in one go, and that's really not a cost I wish to incur. Here's 16 or so hours worth of water - it's just enough to fill the bottom part, and put a few inches in the second level.

Had a bunch of the top soil moved around to different spots in yard, and have been doing work on getting a nice garden area to the east of the pond.

Still fretting over how I'm going to put the waterfall in. The angle of the embankment makes it tricky, but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

There's already frogs in the water, and four or five pairs of dragon flies, which are really fun to watch. The clay is holding water perfectly, and the clarity is better than I expected. It should be really fun next spring when I get some lotus and lilies started. I'm thinking now that after I feel like things are going well, I may actually go with koi.

I'll be sure to update when there's more worth updating, but juggling this, making a chicken coop, and finding the right grad school all at once, so please bear with me. Again, thanks for all the support - this is the best community ever.

So, I was up on the mound today, cutting out my waterfall steps, when it came to me what to do with the top of the mound - turn it into a pond! I'll use it as a big filter to feed the waterfall. It should end up being about eight feet long, six feet wide, and three to four feet deep.

Making some progress on filling the pond. The ability of the clay to hold water is amazing.
