Starting a 500 gallon build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just a brief update. Going out of town again for a week so work has been keeping me pretty busy before I leave, but I have been able to do some things. I am pretty set on the stand idea now based on the concrete block base and steel beams for the top to distribute weight.

I am also going to be picking up some more items when I get the tank in 2 weeks, including an MTC HSA 1000 protein skimmer, Iwaki 55RLT, an RO system and a large water storage tank. Filtration I think will be dual FX5's, and using 2 Koralia 4 powerheads for now. Still looking into lights, UV and good place to get live rock and decent price. Suggestions?

I don't know why my last post didn't stay up, so here goes again...

Drove 9 hrs roundtrip yesterday to pick up the tank. Beautiful tank with rounded edges, huge overflow and will make for some pictures of swimming in the tank. Since its 1" acrylic, we had 6 guys and couldn't lift it into the truck, had to tilt the tank at an angle and back the truck up to the tank then lay it down. Having 6 guys come over to my house in a few hours to help move it in, hopefully with a couple of 4-wheel dollys it will go smoothly.

I will post pictures once its moved in, its strange knowing a crazy tank is in a uhaul outside my house but I can't do anything with it yet...

Here is a promised picture. Got it in with 3 other guys, 3 dollys and only about 30 minutes. Now I just have to clean it. Any suggestions on the best cleaning solution? I use water/vinegar on glass to work well, but on acrylic it seems to leave some residue that easily wipes off. Maybe bleach/water is better for acrylic?

Still in the process or cleaning the tank, that back plastic piece is taking some real work. Should hopefully be able to finish over the weekend. The filters (2 FX5's) arrived today, purchase from a fellow MFKer. I had decided to go with an all metal stand that can be used in the future to support the tank when it gets installed to a wall end. Trying to find a local welder who can do this, or I can build myself a stand for about $500. The only question is how many people it will take to get on top of a 3' stand. The seller had it listed that this was a 1" acrylic tank, but that is only the brace panel. The front and back are 1.5" and the sides+bottom are 1.25", so it weighs significantly more than I thought.

I did however contact the aquarium vendor to get a value for the tank. After the distributors markup, this tank is easily in the $13-15k range when brand new.

What a Monster! :WHOA:

Should look awesome once it’s up and running. :headbang2

What about the support needed for the floor? Are you going to add some support structure in the basement for all this weight?
