Starting a Discus Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It looks nice. I have a 100g discus tank and as far as algae eaters go I did add a mated pair of long fin albino bristle nose plecos. I also had some blue rams. They spawned. They started getting aggressive toward the discus. The discus killed them........ I had planned on removing them from the tank the next day but they were already dead when I went to do it. I was a little surprised by that turn of events and checked the h20 parameters. Everything was normal and since there is nothing else in the tank, they either killed each other or the discus did it. That was awhile back and the discus are still doing well. Good luck with your rams, I hope yours behave a little better toward their superiors :)

blue rams can be agressive, but if you make enough hiding/breeding places it shouldn't become a problem. I have 2 females (and they actually lay eggs once a week.. have to love it), they normally choose between 2 different places which are well out of the way for the discus.
As spawning places i have wood but they prefer flower pots, small ones will do perfectly.

I just picked upp the discus and eneded up getting 4 blue diamonds instead of tangerine dreams(the blues were alot nicer looking. So the approx size is 5" nose to tip of the fin. Is this still considered juvie and at risk of being stunted due to the planted tank? The breeder said they would grow fine in my tank but I would like to make sure.

Great looking tank. Good luck with your discus. I used to have discus years ago. Beautiful fish.

If they are 5", you should be OK. I wouldn't expect them to grow huge in a planted tank, but if you don't mind 5" to 6" fish, no worries. Good luck, and keep that tank as clean as possible. :D

pics! pics! pics! :) please of course :D

I have it heavily planted around the edges and failrly open in the middle so I will remove the driftwood while vacuuming and do my best around the base of the plants. If I lose a bit of sand, too bad for me, I have an extra 50 pound bag and will add more if neccessary. I am hoping with due diligence I can grow them bigger than 6". They were a bit smaller than I was expecting to be honest though. Thanks for the advice, which I will be taking, as I have heard you are a discus ninja!
