Hey guys. I am in the planning stages of building my 14' x 6' x 4' tank. I was wondering do you guys think it is feasible to build it out of wood? Just a thought. I need some good ideas. I am building in my garage which is 30' x 30'. I need some good ideas. It will have two panes of glass on the front. I know concrete would be a better option, but I need something that is not permanent. We will probably sale our house in about 5-10 years and build one for ourselves. So I am not willing to concrete in the garage. What kind of bracing would I have to use ect? I have some ideas, but was wanting to put this out there so that everyone could tell me their ideas, and I can plan accordingly. Any help is much appreciated.
Tnx

Oh my, you are $h1tting me!!!, you want to make a temporary 2500gallon tank!!!, umm, cool.

Ok well ther is nothing wrong with making it out of wood, with vertical studs, you could go with 2X4's 6-12" on center with bracing along the top every 24" to keep it together, but 4x4's are better... but you can just as easly go with cinderblocks, they comeapart prity easly and you can takeapart a whole tank in a day with a 5lb hand sledge and a goodsized chisle,

the problem usaly is water-proffing, pond liner works very well for a temporary thing, and if you dont sell the house you can leave it for years and years..., what size are the panes of glass you want to use?

You do realize that your glass would have to be atleast 3/4" thick. mow do want it to be 6" tall or 4"tall, im hoping 4" and if you want it to be 6" then you need like 1" thick glass..., the pressure would be HUGE!!!

im thinking of a big ply tank too , some im gonna steal all the answers lol

Honest to GOD, at that size, I'd do this: http://www.sunenterprises.com/sandstonepools.htm

Just figure out how to put a window in it, and you're done. I think you'd spend almost half as much in buying a swimming pool than building it from scratch.

My $0.02.... I just googled swimming pools. I'm sure there's cheaper/better size options out there.

The tank will be 4ft, panes. Not sure if I should go glass from top to bottom to avoid cutting it and doing 2, 4x6ft. panes or cut it down to a size smaller than what I mentioned. I am reading the article on the shark tank. I like it and it sounds similar to what I am going to do. So I'll read on and see how helpful it is. Also does anyone have the url to the website called garf? Sounds like it has some helpfull info. Might have to redo some of my dimensions. Might just make it 12'x6'x3 1/2' or 4' I don't need a lot of depth since it will be primarily a catfish tank. Also how big do you guys think the filter would have to be for a 2000 gal-2500 gal tank. It will house very large catfish. TSN, RTC, TSNxRTC hybrid, and a few other suprises. Probably would love to get an adontis pleco too. Tnx for all the suggestions so far.

you can post your progress here with me too!!! How big is your tank gonna be?

decided to go with 4x4 construction. Dimensions will be 12'x8'x4'. Wondering if you guys think that I will need to use more than 4x4s for the bottom frame since it will encounter the greatest stresses? The calculator on garf has the gallonage at 2800 gal. I know it will be less than that, but it's a rough estimate. I think after you factor in the wall thickness it will be more like, 2400 gal. The viewing windows will be 4'x3' 2 of them on the front side. Any ideas of how thick of glass or acryllic, haven't decided which to use yet.

guess I am going to start my concept drawings, and buy materials. Seems that pics are the only way to get anyone's attention around here because they think you are just day dreaming other wise. If you've seen my fish, you'll know I am serious about this build. I have already made a fully sealed insulated box for my pond to go in with a fully insulated lid to withstand the harse montana temps. Any help is greatly appreciated guys. I will start buying the wooden portions and bolts, screws, ect, so that I can start, and eventually when I figure out how thick the glass should be I will buy that. Thanks for those who have replied.

Yeah Man PICS!!!

I'm excited to see the progress
