How does this sound? I have an
Xp4, marineland 350 canister, marineland emp 400, 2xaquaclear 110 and what ever sump comes with my 240. 8x2x2 tank mates will be a common wolffish and the ray. Thoughts?

Sounds like overfiltration-unless your familiar with stingrays! A consistent pattern among ray keepers is we tend to overdue our filtration but only in comparison to standard aquarium practices.

As "monster fish" are concerned it is a general practice that we must compensate for the excess waste these creatures produce.

It is good to see and hear how others due it- now if we can get some of the more experienced-"long term" ray keepers to chime in that would be phenomenal.

So far it seems - canister filters along with steady, frequent water changes are common.

I planned for those to be used temp, than sold on here when I didn't need them. I wanted to use a sump, but not sure how much gph i need. I may use a canister and the sump, or something. Idk. Lol

i found that it can be pretty tough to keep their tank clean depending on how much u feed. i try to filter at least 10x per hour (all my tanks are actually about 15x per hour)

i will also always use a bio reactor on all my future ray tanks. they are rated for a huge bio load and are very easy to maintain.

my biggest tank is a 450 gal, about 5 rays in the 16" range (average). about 15x turnover per hour and 700 gph bio reactor. oh also a 57 watt uv

heres a quick link to my reactor http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203203&highlight=diy+bio+reactor

Wow never herd of that before, looks like a... Um... Hell I can't think. Looks really ba tho. I'll prob stick to 1 ray and perhaps a couple other fish.

Did you build your sump your self? Every place I've looked have been a lot and no comes with no media. I need to find someplace with a nice yet inexpensive sump. I don't really want to spend an arm and a leg. Ideas? I would try to build my own but I don't have the tools.

284gal 80"x40"x20.5" acrylic
50 gal sump
20gal trickle tower in sump, filled with bio balls (soon to be increased to 40gals)
approx 40-50 pounds of bio-media in the sump(ceramic media)
25 watt UV
Pumps run at approx 2100gph
Pair of koralia pumps inside tank at combined 2100gph.
600watts of heating

Stocking:
Pair of motoros
1 Boesemani ray
1 panda gold Asian arowana

Stocking will be changed this month..

on my 500 gal i run a 120 gal sump with filter socks and jap mat. also have some scrubbies in there. That flows to a sequence 3600 gph pump that flows to an ultima II bead filter. I also run a quiet one 6000 pump in the tank that is hooked up to an underwater spray bar. I have 1000 watts heating the tank. Every 4-5 days is a 40% water change.

Interesing, how loud is your pumps? Custom made sump? Link to your pumps? Idk what to do. I can't find any that aren't 500$ or more
